Caravanette Mot

Postby pictishpunkgirl » Sat Dec 16, 2006 2:52 pm

The guy at the garage said that if our van was a caravanette, then it would be a class4 instead of 7 and could then be moted less strictly, if this is the case, what would need to be done to class it as a caravanette, and would it be harder or more expensive to insure it?, If there is anyone with experience in this sort of thing, their advice would be appreciated.

3.5 tonnes but he said it could still be a Class 4 if it was a caravanette, despite the weight. True or false? :D

Correct, normallly a van between 3000kgs and 3500kgs then it requires a class 7 MOT but if it's registered as a motorhome then it can still be MOTed as a class 4.

Class 4 MOT

Postby welshrussell » Sat Dec 16, 2006 6:45 pm

I've just looked at my 1976 MK1 MOT, and it says Class 4.

Can anyone tell me what I will get away with compared to a Class 7?

I'm thinking along the lines of rusty wings :(

Cheers!

You can have rusty wings but you can't have sharp edges or bits about to fall off.

If you are talking about vehicles over 3500kgs, then they require a HGV test from the date they are 1 year old and every year then after.

So does anyone know what you have to do to the vehicle to change it from a van to a caravanette?

Unless it's a motorcaravan, then it's 3 years! Class 4 MOT regardless of weight! Old coaches etc fitted out as motorcaravans (not race transporters, they're different) are class 4 MOT.
