why....

Postby becky » Thu Dec 28, 2006 12:31 pm

if you can buy after market gagits that both increase your engines power and mph.

WHY aren`t the engines tuned this way from the factory.

is it an engine reliability thing...

It just seems strange ford don`t tune the engine to the increase fuel consumtion
jumbos do it standing up....

I guess its reliability. Tuning is always a fine line between power and reliability, manufacturers will always be conservetive cause they dont want things blowing up under warranty. I've looked at turning fuel pump up on mine, but decided against it as its done an unknown quantity of miles ( speedo says 110,000, sticker on cam belt cover says last changed at 161,000!!) and I do a lot of miles so want the engine to last, plus im used to how gutless it is now!

Main thing is if you up the power theres more strain on the engine and therefore more chance of it going wrong. Thats why manufacturers say if you tune it you lose the warranty :D

I would say it's a cost thing. All businesses are looking to keep costs down, so if each addition even adds 50p to the cost of a van, it adds up.

:? with these modern diesel engines they can just up the power output with very little expence , not like years ago when everything would have to be alterd! as guy says putting too much through would not do the engine anygood, but fords are clever as if you want a standars traNsit this will have a 85ps engine in and if you what the big engine out put in the swb its a 130ps but thetre engines are basicaly the same its all done with ecu electronics!
sane with my van its a 125ps but by adding difrent info into the ecu it makes it about 165ps! :)

I would say, the companies build what suits most people's needs! Especially in case of a van, most buyers are commercials and look much more on fuel consumption and torque rather than maximum top-end power!

And the serice intervals are shorter if you up the power :!: :!:
And these are missed sometimes

i always thought it was to do with things like manufactures cant guarantee the quality of fuel used! or as andy said taking into account missed servicing etc etc plus the fact they are mass producing so to adjust each countries range accordingly would again cost more money  so i guess its just a safety tolerence so they dont get stuffed with too many warrenty claims :( yet some people seem to be having trouble with the mk6 137ps :( plus i bet eu legislation on emissions and noise have something to do with it

the fact that turbos and ECU's allow you to up the power easily and manufacturers fit stronger parts with better tolerances for improved reliabity/economy that just happen to be able to withstand the greater stresses a more powerfull engine put on them just happens to make life easy for the aftermarket guys.

ford (or whoever) need to keep the warranty claims down, and also need to allow for the casual driver who dont care about the car except as a way to get from A to B so they will set up the engine where they think its right for the job its doing.

its always been the case, its just easier to buy an aftermarket chip now, but even back in the 70's ford would sell you an escort mexico with a twin sidedraught 40's, hot cam, high comp pistons etc etc if you asked em, which i guess was the equivalent of bunging in a performance chip.
