Thinking I should resurect my mk5

Postby dirtydog » Tue Apr 26, 2016 10:42 pm

My mk5 has been sat on the drive for the past 2 years basically being used as a storage shed. I started to do some welding on it, replaced inner and outer wing, arch and sill but then work got busy so not really had time to do much on it since. I bought a mk6 as replacement but had nothing but issues with it so got rid of it.

I was thinking of getting some money saved up to get a mk7 but they seem to have some injector and engine troubles so now I'm in a quandary as to what to do.
Keeps saving and get a mk7 as planned but risk future issues like rumble has had with his as well as a couple of others or do I find the time to get the mk5 welded up and back to work?

I wonder are mk7 euro 5 more reliable? Maybe get 1 of those?

Plenty mk7 on salvage sites cheapish.
Mk7 all tidy might look better for business

Mk5 just sat there on the other hand, if it's tidy and not rotten then why not have a go?
Ask around for any 17 year old budding mechanics they'll spend all day welding it for 5 pound I'm sure 8)
That's what I used to do :-(
Mind you 5 pounds got me 20 cigs 4 beers and some food in those days

I'm quite tempted to try and put my minibus back on the road, but I stopped using it because of the London LEZ, and then my insurers who I had used for over 10 years, suddenly wouldn't insure a minibus, even one with only 8 passenger seats :(
It would probably now need the attentions of a welder, and they're both rare and expensive around here

We've ran MK 7s since 2006.
We've had to change 2 engines in 10 years, one because the idiot driver found second at about 80mph and blew it up, and the other after the oil filter was smashed of it.

That's it other than regular servicing, brakes, tyres etc
A few gearbox bearings, and a rebuild on my gearbox when in warranty.
I've never had to do an injector or turbo on any of them, that's includes one that was on 180k miles when it left us.

They're not all bad!

Daft bugger.

Passed 2 smileys this week still in use and in tidy condition. the ones still here are probably coz they are looked after. Handy men wanting a cheap van to do a mornings work before going to pub have moved on to mk6s.

Thanks for all the replies,

My mk5 is never going to be a looker which isn't great when you pull up outside someone's house.

I'll keep putting money aside for a newer van

You lot must work for fussy buggers cos my customers don't care what I turn up in as long as I turn up.

I ran a beaten up escort van that was held together with duct tape and hope for two years and seemed to get lots of work, maybe everyone felt sorry for me so employed me to paint there houses, and I got more tips then. N

Don't get a blue van they are invisible. N
