cooking oil in a Di

Postby bortaf » Thu Sep 22, 2005 9:03 pm

Well i had a bit of a play with the fuel this week and have come to the conclusion that a 20% mix of cooking oil is about the max a Di will go without running problems.
Infact at 20% i would have to say that it runs quieter and smoother than on Derv aloan, the down side is the exhaust fumes do smell a bit like a cross between a wok that you've left on the heat to long and a barbicue  but only really noticable at traffic lights and such when your stationary.
Not sure if the millage suffers any cos i've only done about 100 miles round town but doing a run to Derby saterday so i'll see how it compairs then.

Running smoother is not a suprise, veg oil is infact hight calorific value (equivalent to octane in petrol) than diesel. Rape seed oil is thinnest, by coincidence Asda's cheapo cooking oil is pure rapeseed.

I think you will find the thinner the better, so rapeseed oil is the best in this respect, it goes through the injectors easier.

if anybody takes a cheap swipe at you for running on veg oil, remind em its carbon nuetral as well as saving on your pocket, not only that you are putting those poor farmers produce to good use! my trials have been a total success on van and cars

A fella i know is running hes 52 plate 350 2.4 duratorq on 80% sunflower oil and there is no noticable difference than on diesel, very slight smell from the back but you have to put your nose to the exhaust to smell it, i think the cat is helping the smell :D we only just put a secondhand fuel pump on the van 8 weeks ago where he f----d it by using red diesel from cans that had remnants of water and TFR left in them, he said he wouldnt use red again after that and so converted to the sunflower oil  he has been using it for about 5 weeks and says it starts ,pulls and runs the same as when on pure diesel 8) i see a program on men and motors a couple of weeks back and there was a woman in California or somewhere and she was running her truck on pure sunflower oil and she said no adjustments had to be made, what is the legal side of this in the UK:?:

Geoff, if you run on veg oil you are supposed to contact Customs and Excise as it's a fuel tax issue (cos we all love paying fuel tax, don't we?) You have to register and tel them all the veg oil you use, and pay fuel duty on it. There are no issues as far as Construction and Use regs, and I don't think it should affect the particulate trap or affect emissions, it just depends depends on how the actual engine handles it.

I'm using a (20% mix) at the mo which has the effect of lowering the price of the fuel i use to 86p per litre (10p drop) and it's nicer to drive, which to be honist with the amount of miles i do is the main reason i'll be doing it.

Very good point, but the 'environmentally friendly' government and customs and excise conveniently forget this.............

A freind of ours runs his di on 100% veg oil. He has fitted a pre-heat system in the engine bay that heats up the oil, before it gets pumped into the engine. He reports, no loss in power and practically no smoke out the exhaust. Working out at 50p a litre, it makes his 300 mile round trip to newquay, to go surfing every weekend far cheeper. I'm seriously thinking of going down this route with our camper. It won't sound as nice as the V6. But you can't have everything.

50p a litre seems a bit expensive for cooking oil!
