Postby gasbo » Thu Aug 30, 2018 10:48 pm

just wondered how do i stand...i took it in to have the diff replaced and looked over so they took it out but said they are struggling to get parts for my mk3 transit petrol ex bt van platform chassis square axle...i want them to put it back together again and i will take it home and search for a second hand axle...do u think i should pay for their labour taking out the diff? the garage specialises in axle and prop shafts and thats why i took it there..shelleys of wolverhampton

Personally I'd offer them a few quid in good faith and get it back together and home.

As experts they should really know the state of play with second hand parts tbh, also if they are experts then it will have taken them all of half an hour to strip it to the point of conclusion.

If they are holding you to random expecting lots of money then you explain that they did the job in good faith but you are no better off so call it a few quid and quits, and explain that it's a fair 1 but they don't want you threatening to slag them off to all unsundary.

I don't think that they would have intentionally tried it on.

Some ppl might have had some sort of hissy but it will get you nowhere in this case I think, it's not like they fooked something up from negligence.

I bought a perfectly fooked axle from Ford for 1000gbp and had to fix it myself. I bought a transit custom for 12k which had a fooked injector that Ford couldn't diagnose and that I replaced myself.

If you went to the doctor and stripped you clothes off and the doc told you are gonna croak it would you run out the door with no clothes on or dress back up and pay and then leave :?: Pay up and look happy its not their fault .

yeah sounds about the right action to take..trouble is i took it in tuesday 8am and i had to phone them every day to see how it was going because i need it to go to cornwall next week...all they had to say was " dont think we can do it"..instead complete silence for 3 days

Mine was in Ford for 2 days +, and I had to keep calling them :-(
They even pretended they weren't aware of it

Oh yes the red transit I remember

Mechanics and engineers are just full of lies I'm afraid.

Cars tend to get fixed on a sliding scale of easiness, it achieves the most money.

Hopefully you'll get it fixed somehow.

one could argue that, without stripping to examine it? Then they would be unsure of what may need attention?

A nominal fee for the inspection and reassembly is surely a fair deal?

THEY want £360 to put everything back with new oil...they say they can do it today now for £595 plus vat so told them to do it...they say rear bearings are knackered so they want £200 to fit them and the prop shaft centre bearing that i had fitted a month ago they say is knackered because they didnt fit it right...total cost of everything £1050..oh well

They're holding you to ransom I think. Fooking grand :?

I know that maybe a partial strip down would be ideal to diagnose an axle but ffs there's not that much in there that they could and should have known what parts to order or at least check for availability.
Especially if they claim to be an axle specialist, they'd know exactly what was involved and available.

I'd tell them to get the rear wheels mobile then get it towed home if possible.

I've dealt with knob heads and axles including Ford.
I apologize for getting a little enthusiastic.

£360 to not fix it

I wouldn't have not fixed it for half that

X amount of hours labour to strip/diagnose and put back so the van is moveable.

NOT the crazy figure they have chucked on the table.

Why do they want to put new bearings in what is essentially a fooked axle.

well total bill £1002..had to ask my mate to help me out because they wouldnt accept my cheque..i was abit desperate to get it done because i'm going cornwall next week but for the record i did ask them for a quote first but was told they had to strip it down first so fell into their trap..i understand you need to do that but if they had told me £600 for a reconditioned diff i might have said no thanks but i asked Trends in nottingham and theirs was a similar price..the van has done 250k miles and all original parts until today so i guess i cant grumble...so in two years ive spent £1500 for reconditioned engine,£800 to get it thru last months MOT and now this £1000 so £3300 spent in 2 years...before that it hadnt cost me much and i bought the van 8 years ago at 64k miles...the reason i'm attatched to it is because it runs on lpg so at 52.7p a litre it equates to about 45mpg equivalent so where can you get a diesel box van that does that? probably best you'll get is 27mpg or maybe i'm wrong on that if anyone has got one? last year the price of lpg dropped to 38p so it was great going to cornwall from birmingham for £40..by the way its the square H axle so pretty rare i think but there is a guy near Leeds who has one for £150 and he says its low milage if anyone wants it
