Transit pre2014 diesel use high

Postby Groovejet » Thu Jan 14, 2021 5:31 am

The same 5 hr return journey in two similar vans, there was a difference of £30 in diesel.
My van cost £80, other van was £50. What could be issue? Massive differance

Are they both the same height? (H3 uses more fuel than H2 at motorway speed)
Tyres inflated properly?
Same weight on board?
Both the same engine and final drive?

If all these factors are similar, the mpg should be similar.
There's not many faults that have a big effect on fuel consumption (on a diesel), because if the fuel is being burnt, it's producing power.
Maybe a fault causing excessive DPF regen?

Be a good idea if you also posted van spec and have you worked out the mpg as well as just the cost as hughesyn says vans need to be the same to get a true comparison.

Heres the Spec. of the Transit.
Transit 2009/59
SWB 2.2TDCi (85ps) 280 Medium Roof (FWD)

Normally van is rammed with every tool known to man. But a great lot of tools was removed before jouney. Shelves were still loaded with glues, silicones, plumbing stock, so add it up, it probally weighs abit tbh.
But still! £30 differance is alarm bells. Even if it was a Transit v's Merc. Sprinter....£30?? surely that still wouldnt be right?

Pretty much the same as my Transit.

£80 of fuel would take me anywhere between 400-500 miles, depending on how hard (fast) I drive it, but if you're a pedal to the metal, hard braking, kind of guy, it will probably do much less than that.
I have managed to get over 600 miles from a full tank (just once) running it almost to empty

yes must admit i do brake late and all of that. Although i dont drive stupid but i call it confident driving. Idont go slow and dont go silly. Only reason i go slower around corners is because all my tools end up on van floor if i do..lol
