As of 1st March 2021 the LEZ, which covers all of Greater London (where I live), almost out to the M25, has raised the emissions standard for all vans over 3.5 tonnes (my ELWB is 4.2 tonnes) from Euro 3 to Euro 6

The charge for me to drive from where I live is now £100 per day!!!

Fines are £2000, if paid within 14 days £1000

Details of the tighter LEZ standards:

https://www.london.gov.uk/press-release ... KG78hKMQO8

HGVs, heavy vans, buses/minibuses and coaches

· Lorry, heavy van or specialist heavy vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight

· Bus/minibus or coach over 5 tonnes

Current standard: Euro IV - particulate matter (PM)

New standard: Euro VI - nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). This is the same as the ULEZ standard - these vehicles will no longer need to pay a separate ULEZ charge

For the majority of vehicles, the strengthening of the LEZ standards means that they are no longer separately subject to LEZ and ULEZ standards. The exception is for vans between 1.2T and 3.5T and minibuses under 5T where the LEZ and ULEZ standards are different. These vehicles will need to comply with both schemes if they drive into the ULEZ area or pay both sets of charges.

You can still check if your vehicle meets the current standards.

Daily charges under the tougher standards

We would prefer that your vehicle meets the tougher LEZ emissions standards, so you don't need to pay the daily LEZ charge.

If you drive a HGV, lorry, van or other specialist heavy vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight or a bus/minibus or coach over 5 tonnes gross vehicle weight within the LEZ and it does not meet Euro VI (NOx and PM), you will need to pay the daily LEZ charge.

If your vehicle:

· Meets Euro IV or V (PM) - you will need to pay a daily charge of £100

· Does not meet Euro IV (PM) - you will need to pay a daily charge of £300

No charge if vehicle meets Euro VI standard (NOx and PM).

Thats interesting, but it doesn't explain why my sub 3.5T MPV is now no longer compliant?

Crazy lez laws

Postby timewarptel » Wed Apr 21, 2021 1:26 pm

Hi all, just thought i would share this with you. So i have a 2001 mk 6 lwb hi-top transit, and i live within greater london, namely sydenham se26. After having struggled to get through mot recently, ....needed welding....and just fitted new oil cooler, my van is now effectively banned from the road. My van has always been ok for the london wide lez law which came in a few years back, but unbeknown to me, khan tightened it on march 1st 2021. First i knew about it was when a letter arrived from tfl yesterday, saying my van was seen in the lez zone on april 3rd, without having paid the appropriate charge. I was shocked, and checking online, found that since march 1st, i was now expected to pay £100 per day because my engine was not now compliant. They said no fine will be issued on this occasion, but the thing is i have driven it a number of times since law was toughened, in ignorance, so i could still get loads of pcns saying i didnt pay the £100 for driving in the lez. They say ignorance is no defence in law, but surely tfl could inform owners that their van is about to become non-compliant. I only use van for fishing/camping etc, and dont go out in it very often, but now van is in car park of my flats, stuck there, and im breaking law if i take it out of car park, unless i pay £100 per day. What a life eh, .....thinking of moving to deepest kent! Terry

Out of interest what model/body is it?

There is nothing to say the standard has changed for sub 3500kg vehicles - and funnily enough one of mine (which was "out of scope" - i.e. a car) has just been brought in to it too :?

Someone else posted a similar thing recently, so I had a look at the TFL website, and the only thing I could see that had changed for the LEZ, was for vehicles above 3500kg.

What is the GVW of yours :?:
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)

Hi guys , my van is the high top lwb 2.4, but log book definitely says the weight is 3290 kg gross, which im hoping is below 3.5 ton. If so tfl must have made a mistake surely. What do you guys think? Terry

Ha ha.....its me nerves matt, got me all flustered. Some of you guys have alluded that tfl sent you letters, saying your van was going to become non compliant. Is this the norm? Cause they havent sent one to me. Also do they often make mistakes re catagorising a van for lez? Terry

I don't recall anyone getting a letter saying it was going to become un-compliant...

I checked the online system, and like yourself others have had letters to say they have been naughty.

What is interesting is all the previous info about Euro 3 etc and early adopters seems to have been removed from the LEZ website and document search etc. I can't find anywhere now that give a criteria for compliance - its all down to what the online check says....

I have emailed TFL asking what the score is for my van - complete with a letter they sent me previously saying its "not subject" to the LEZ (rather than just being compliant)

Interestingly, the issue of compliant vehicles no longer appearing to be so seems to be earlier mk6s - so it looks like they have dropped the early adopters statements from manufacturers?
