Transfering reg mark

I'm thinking of scrapping the 1999 T plater I'm advertising in the For Sale section as no one's coming forward for it, can I transfer the reg plate to my current van before taking it to a breakers yard? It's not exactly a special reg but as it was my first van I'm thinking of transfering it onto every successive van I have.

i believe as long as it is motd you can get the transfer done, either to another vehicle or onto a certificate.

Just answered my own question courtesy of DVLA form V317, provided it is taxed and mot'd no problem, need the V5. If untaxed, provided it was SORN without a break, no problem. If however no current MOT they may wish to inspect! You have to convey it to the inspection. Why? If it is ready for scrap what is there to inspect? So I won't be bothering.

Some reg marks are non-transferable, it'll say so if it isn't on front page of V5, "special notes"

It sure is.. we've had offers from people (not here) but we've been advised not to sell to them for reasons I won't go into here so we're going to get the scrap man to haul it off, from a business perspective it's a loose end and we want it off our books before our financial year end to make a dent in our tax bill due to the capital loss.

They ant to satisfy themselves that the vehicle that you are transferring the number from is what you say it is. I had to take a Starlet to MOT centre hen I sold the plate on it. The inspector ent round the vehicle with his clipboard and appeared to be ticking boxes. He then inspected the chassis number and said that OK, you can take it away again. It seemed a pointless exercise but they call the shots
