HI ive just had my insurance pay out and was looking at buying a 9 seater minibus 8 seats + 1 driver been on dvla website can understand it so could some 1 tell me in the simplest turms .. can i drive it on my standard driving licence i passed my test in 1989 and i will be charging people no freebys the dvla keeps babling on about 17seats grrrr help me please thanks...

If you passed your test before July 1998 you should have Category D1 which entitles you to drive a Minibus up to & including 16 Passenger Seats but not for hire and reward. :!:

If you want to charge people you need a Private Hire Plate up to 8 Passeger Seats or Class 6 Public Service Vehicle for 9 Passenger Seats and over, you would then also require either Private Hire / Taxi Badge or PSV Drivers Licence and Public Service Vehicle Operators Licence plus appropriate Hire and Reward Insurance and Public Liability insurance. :roll:

It's much easier not to charge people :!:

otherwise it becomes a minefield to do it legally. :!:

so if i have an 8 seater all i have to do is regester it to the council as a private hire no need for pcv i can use my old licence is that correct i dont want any more seats just a 8 seater +1 drivers seat ..thanks

You will need a Taxi/Private Hire Drivers licence.

The vehicle will need a Council Plate and, be of a certain age...

You must contact the council office in the town you want to use it in for details....

Budget on £3000!

Don't do it for money as in a cash transaction.

Offer your punters a raffle ticket for a said amount, of course for that said amount 'bet' they will win their ride.

If you want to do the odd airport run shouldn't be a prob, also insurance as a private motorist is "not for hire or reward", and as they are "winning" a ride in your car, maybe that gets round it.

I wouldn't take my word for it though, I am sure the insurance companies have big lawyers wearing those wigs that will see you in a boiler suit of some colour and never heard of again, should you choose to smash up your motor, with your "raffle" winners on board!
