yesterday while vanning i came up on a slow moving truck.so slowed down without a drama.then the truck just stopped with no lights working on the damn thing .i threw out a verry large handfull of anchors and my rear end of the mk1 went violently sideways to the right.it has disc front,drum rear.i have never had this happen before.does any one have any ideas?.it allways stops in a safe fashion with good pedal feel.ta

Have a look at the left rear wheel cylinder. That must be the one that didnt brake.

If I were you I would consider using the new FM Brake Pads they give a fantastic Brake. The same company BBS also sell Brake Discs that are really good and the most reasonably priced parts I have seen. Pads are about £20 for the front wheel drive or rear wheel drive Transits and the Brake Discs are about £25 each.

thanks for the replys folks.i adjusted the rear drums last night and find it still feels unsettled during panic stops.its better than before but allso have a slight grinding sound on the left rear.in normal braking situations it pulls up straight and safe but the grinding sound stays on for a bit after stoping.

the wheel cylinders pistons should be able to move in and out rather easily, I bet yours are siezing, get a pair of new ones,and replace both sides, cos you will probably find at the mot it will brake unevenly if you dont.
