When did you first see your van?

Postby FredTransit » Fri Dec 09, 2005 12:01 am

There are quite a few occasions of first sightings that spring to mind for me. The first (a 1974 Mk1 LWB), glimpsed through the wire fence of a plant yard in Rotherham, the first only new one, rising above the cars in a dealership in 1986 in Finchley, the big un over the wall of a privately owned car park in Limehouse, and the latest (the amby) in the garden of a house in Liecester.

When did you first see your van, was it love at first sight?

I first saw my minibus, was when I went out to it because it wouldn't start
I commented about how tidy it was :)

Somethings never change, it won't start now! :P

well this qeustion is impossible for me to reply to as i cant say because of have so many vans over the years! so i will go with my mk1 ,i first looked at it in a dealers yard in dortmond in germany after flying overthere! she sat there with no rust attal on her bright red paintwork,so i just had to get her back to the uk,then driveing it into the uk i discoverd that i hated it beeing left hand drive ,so i had 2 options sell it or convert it to right hand drive, so 2 months later i was sitting on the correct side and well chuffed with myself for dooing all the work myself!, i then found that the diff was no good as top speed was around 55mph flat out ,so i had another diff fitted to stop her revving ,then i was so underpowerd, so now she has a 3ltr v6 and overdrive gearbox to pull it along! :) Image

Mark that looks bloody gorgeous 8)

First time I saw my van she was at PC autos in Long Eaton, the chap that owned her did not want to pay the asking price for the respray, which was all white at the time and only £300, so I gave the owner £100 for the van, asked PC to do my custom paint job(the red over the white back end) and the grand total was £450........Turns out the chap that owned the van before didnt want to spend the money cos he thought it would cost a fortune to put through its M.O.T, it cos me a new bottom ball joint :D

 Back in late sixties my Dad worked for Smiths crisps driving a f reg ford d series box van, It used to get serviced at local Ford commercial dealers Neashams at old airfield Thornaby Middlesbrough. One day we went to pick it up from service the salesman showed us into an old hanger where they used to store new vehicles down one side was about ten brand new d series trucks waiting to go out,on the other side was some mk1 transits waiting for delivery including a twin wheeler van going to a local (to us ) engineering firm About six years later this van was a well used and very abused van Which we bought for £20 choped the back off and made her into a pickup which we had for a number of years until a tree trunk (prob weighed about 3 ton ) we were carrying rolled off and twisted the chassis so badly we had to scrap her

I first saw my mk1 about 3months before i bought it! i went to look at it for sale at £1000 - i offered him £500 he said no so i left my number and said whenever you want to sell £500 is there waiting for you!!
3 months later and one mot failure he rang me up, so that evening i went round and brought it back!!
Passed the MOT - was only a fairly minor wiring problem!! :D
and the rest as they say is history!!! :P
