"Racing" spec lift

Postby Muttley » Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:49 pm

I have decided to go for Pinto power for my 88 di spec to foil TFL. Having decided to go the petrol route I set about sourcing the bits required! I have ended up with four pinto lumps and a 2.1 Harris bottom end. The engine destined to power old Muttley down the highway will be as follows. 2.1litre, Kent fr30 cam, stage 2 head with unleaded conversion, 32/36 DFM twin choke carb on ford manifold, Sierra efi manifold and twin front pipe. I am looking at about bhp of 120 ish and torque to match the old diesel lump :D Sierra leccy ignition is coming soon. I have no idea how this old truck will perform but i think it should be a bit better than it is now!! I have also put together a list of parts needed to put a pinto in your diesel mk3 so I will post that soon

The carb and starter were stripped and painted then rebuilt with new bits :D The lump is now almost built and I hope to fit it b4 the end of the week!

I'm not sure how it will go at all, but I have driven a mk2 spec lift with a similar spec pinto and its pretty rapid and still pulls the weight. Fuel consumption is not tooo bad so I am hopeful :D

Got to say madmark I think you have a duff pinto too. I would think my LWB is a similar weight to your LWB (would say the Mk1 is lighter) and on the M1 over the week end she was pulling lovely at 60 with plenty more to go. Can't remember how many years ago it was when we last towed with her, but again would take a big box trailer to 55 fine.

Its got a lot to do with the cam, the cam i am using has a power band from 2000 to 6000 rpm and has lift and duration aimed at torque as well as hp. The extra cc also helps. The mk2 spec i drove for the AA in the eighties had a 2.0 pinto in it and was a good all round truck. Lots of guys doing scrap round here are also on pinto power and all seem happy :D

i have a similar spec in a mk2, high compression (big skim off head) 205 injection engine, fr34 cam, running the sierra injection system, got a 4 branch that i will get around to modifying to fit at some point

its not fast, but it is quick, the first thing you notice is the rubbish brakes and suspension, i dont want it any faster for these reasons! its funny trying traffic light drag races, i lined up against a mitsi evo the other day, into third he realised what i was playing at and put his foot down and left me for dust, i was tickled that i provoked that reaction - in a 20+yr old van

it cruises nice and quick on the motorway, can keep up in the fast lane most of the time

its on LPG too, and does 20mpg+ all the time, so its cheap to run too.

dont expect it to be fast - but it is more fun :D

the Mk3 servo and brake master is noticeably better, and you would get better than 20mpg on petrol and acetone. I have pissed off a few 'tasty' (in their own minds) motors with only a twin choke! It's funny when it happens, but I have to admit its partly cos the other driver isn't paying attention
