Driving Licence Regulations. Trailer towing etc.

Postby vannut » Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:23 am

Thought I'd post a new thread for this one, having posted a bit on the "Total weight on a new shape 90" thread.

The full 1997 Driving licence Regulations are here: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1996/Uksi_19962824_en_1.htm

Click on the blue bits to go to the relevant regs/schedules.

This is the original document, rather than an interpretation, so it's 'straight from the horses mouth' as it were. Everything you need to know about the current Driving Licence regulations is on there.

Hope this helps!

p.s. If you need any bits interpreting or explaining further give me a shout! :)

Not as far as I know, even if you passed your test before 1997 you are still governed by the plated weights on the towing vehicle anyway.

I've put the full answer in the 'total weight for a 350' thread but here's the basic bits:

You can actually tow a trailer over 750kgs even if you passed your test after 1.1.97 but it is complicated!

You can tow a trailer up to 750kgs provided that your Gross train waight (GTW MAM etc) doesn't exceed 4250kgs, so that would mean you could have your van weighing 3500 and trailer weighing 750,

OR

you can tow a trailer exceeding 750 kgs, provided that the train weight doesn't exceed 3500kgs AND that the maximum plated weight of the trailer is LESS than the UNLADEN weight of the drawing vehicle, so in theory you could tow a trailer up to 1700kgs behind a drawing vehicle weighing 1800kgs with a small driver!
