insurance

getting a little confused over insurance, if your self employed and use your van every day, say for working as a builder, do you need carriage of goods or passengers for hire and reward on the policy, or is hire and reward for couriers taxi drivers?

So long as you're not going to transport people or other peoples goods in exchange for money, then you don't need this on your policy. You may want "goods-in-transit" cover which will cover YOUR goods and materials used in the course of your work, but it's best to weigh up the cost of this cover, especially if you don't leave tools or valuable materials in the van overnight
You would be better maybe to spend the money on extra security for the van :)

if you are a builder or plumber you need to ensure you tell the insurance company you use the vehicle for business in that you transport your own materials.
You only need hire and reward if you are carrying something like for instance a wardrobe which you are couriering for someone or doing a house move then you would need hire and reward and it would be adviseable to have GIT ( Goods In Transit) as well.

If you are a builder or plumber or any other trades person just tell them what you do and let them decide what you need, that way if they suggest it you are covered.

speak to a few brokers face to face or on the phone before doing an internet search if at all you need help that way you can satrt bargaining for things free cover etc.

I myself am a stage erector, working in Coporate hospitality and a market trader, transporting my own goods only. (both night time ventures or dark mornings which they do not like) Still only £400 fully comp, class 3 business insurance hire and reward. My GIT is seperate. I have 3 years NCB on van and 9 years mirror off my other vehicle)

try and get someone to give you a mirror NCB if you have it
And my business liability is seperate again but they do deals for everything.

try other searches on here there is info but dont get confused.

£360 does not sound bad !!!

Your age ?
Depends on what your postcode is ?
where the van is kept ?
How many miles you do a year ?
What over valuation you have put on your van ?
how many points you have got ?
if you have anything pending ?
depends on what mood the computer is on at the time ?

Also watch if they are adding vehicle breakdown to the ploicy as that can increase it by £50 or more !

Mines kept off road, excess is £150, like I said £106 fully comp, I can only think that because I have my Shogun, buildings, contents and company liability insurances with them they discount accordingly

i have no excess, its less of a surprise then in the event of an accident.

Yes it is, on a different note, when I first insured the Shogun it only came out at £270 , thats the 2.8 and its now down to £208, maybe cos I`m getting old, 52 now!
