thread on all the different gearboxes

Postby Luke » Sun May 31, 2009 10:23 am

i thought it would be a good idea to have an info thread with all the differnt gearboxes fitted as standard to transits with pictures and details of what years etc. they were fitted to :D
then once it's complete we'll move it into the usefull information section

or if you just have a good picture of a gearbox not listed but ddont know what it's off post it up and somone will fill in the details

Well have went down with camera, and I relized I have 4 boxes :o
Nothing special
Here Is the Famous Mt75 5 speed gbox, all gears are sycromeshed including reverse (which is not a flat gear that goes between another two thus no reversing noise!)
there are twp variants :
Close ratio ; have some ratio differences int 1st 2nd and 3rd gears which make it ideal for towing
Wide ratio: ideal for SWB vans with not much load.

Here is my question :
This 4speed gearbox was taken out from a factroy diesel Mk2 van with the di engine(phase 2)
This one doesn't have a solid bell housing, but it is covered with a plastic cover as in here
Also this gbox have a reverse light swith because phase 2 rear lights have the reverse light
What type is this? Who knows can add info to my post no probs

Image
Dont mind the onions  I tipped the box to take the pic

Image

This Is another 4 speed box but with a solid bell housing , and no reverse switch;

Image

Here its when separated from bel housing and tail;(and ripped off)

Image

And finaly another four speed gearbox , same as the two shown previously but different belhousing for adapting to the old Perkins 4108

And here is a pic showing the difference between the 4speed box gear lever and the Mt75 one:

This is the A4LD gearbox, this one on the Pinto engine, its a 4spd Automatic with lock up on 3 and 4, fitted to a few Transits between 1988 and 1992, the later box looks very similar but has an electronic solenoid rather than vacum controlled and was known as the A4LD'e', this later box was fitted on the Di Turbo models up to 2000.

What about 4 speed boxes with overdrive? What ratios do they have?

What about Type9 gearbox photos?

Great info! Regards!

Wrong way round mate ;) Wide ratio is better for higher loads, the gears are wider spaced (ie. 1st and 2nd are lower) meaning the engine wont have to try so hard to get the load moving.

Its why sports cars are fitted with close ratio gearboxes ;)

stolen from oldskooler's mk2 progress thread  .........

this is a type 9 5 speed with the propper transit stick :D

fitted to mk3 transits 1986-1989 before they introduced MT75

they are basically the same box as a car one and you can fit the transit selector to a car box - but you can see this is a genuine transit one as there is no mounting holes for the car stick :D

btw this particular one has a pinto bellhousing fitted but you can get a Di one i'll add a pic if i can find one :D

that box actually still bolted up to the adaptor plate that originally was on the van, ie not directly to the pinto. in other words it had the same bellhousing as the 4 spd that came out. is that the diesel one and have the york and di have the same bolt pattern??

I can remember when I was an apprentice working for the council, mid/late eighties I guess, and I'm sure we had Di diesels with 4 speed boxes but with a switch on the gearstick for overdrive? Or did it work on 3rd too, as like a splitter between 3rd and 4th? Its all a bit vague now
