Odd thing happend......

Postby crazyscoot » Wed Apr 12, 2006 10:43 pm

Today my fuel was reading below the red empty mark (doesn't worry me, it happens allot!) Pulled in at the local garage and filled up as normal. I always full till the first cut off then wait a few seconds and give it a bit more, then finally a bit more. Average bill is about £63ish. Today though, i filled up and it went all the way to £67.92 :D with 70.09 Litres :D . Now i always thought that the fuel tank held 65 Litre's but when i got home tonight the Haynes manuel came out and it said Fuel tank capacity was 55LTR's? Where did the extra 16Ltrs go! Ive never actually got more than about 63ltrs in before. Puzzled

Ignore Haynes for the moment (as it is often wrong)

I would seriously think about reporting the petrol station as that definately sounds wrong...is the station a big name one or a local owned by whoever, if you are used to the full filling being the 63 litres (allowing for a little in the tank) then you have been stung as with the best will in the world your filler neck doesn't hold the extra litres.
You may well find that the tank has been swapped at some time in the vans life but even so...maybe you ought to let it get as empty again and fill up at the same pump and see what reading you get, one receipt isn't enough to complain about, also don't complain to the opo behind the counter complain to Trading Standards.

When I nearly ran out of diesel it took 63 litres to fill it right up...gauge was off the red  but I didn't have any stations on the road I was going along until the one I filled up at.

had to drain and remove my tank recently to fit a winch in back of van and it took 64 liters (5 in can rest at shell round the corner) to fill compleatly, mines a 96/97 smiley.

My book says 68 litres :D
But I've been to pumps that have managed to increase my tank size by up to 78 litres  And that's if I'd got there on fumes :!:
I rang my trading standards dept. only got an answering machine and they never bothered getting back to me. Now it's been sometime but I still have the reciept :!:
Others do it as well but this was the worst one

I find it odd because i very regularly (rightly or wrongly) (hate filling up!) let the gauge go off the red. I've never been able to get over about 65 litres max. When i fill her up i always fill it as much as i can (hate filling up!). So I'm used to the amount that always goes in. shock  horror  when it went to 71 :!: I haven't said anything to the garage but i'll do as someone suggested here and fill her up at the same pump next visit

I'm the same - Hate filling up :x Might be 'cause you've got to wear one of those glove things or wrap the handle with paper towels (when you find any  )
Any how a bit of useful/useless info; You get more in your tank if your van is higher at the front :!:
If your van is unladen/leaning downwards at the front you get an airlock before the tank is completely full
Ford know of this "concern" and have a modification to help stop this. Customers were complaining that their gauge wouldn't reach "full" after filling :(

well theres an interesting thought, I replaced two lower ball joints two track rod ends two front wheel bearings last weekend, also pumped my tyres up a bit and had the tracking laser aligned. All this wouldn't cause the front to raise up would it? i cant remember what was in the back But could well have been the day i had a full roll of armour cable in the back :?
Anyone else had this happen :?:

It is a fact the garages are a rip off,(most anyway) All you can do is make sure you give your custom to a garage that has proven itself and put the word out about dodgy ones.
Ofcourse if you have an hour and you know you are correct you could refuse to pay or move until they charge you only for what you had , they would call the police , and while you wait you could talk to all the other customers about why you are blocking the pumps, then when the police arrive they will probably tell you to pay and move, you tell the police you want to press charges against the garage for theft. It would be an embarrassing time for the garage.
