What is your choice of tyre's ??

Postby Valsheda » Wed Apr 26, 2006 2:20 pm

Just wondering what choice of tyre people use,

Since having my 16" alloy's on the van i was using Goodyear Cargos 205-65-16, i found that they weren't terrific in the wet and they seemed to wear pretty quick too and at 90-100 quid each that aint cheap ( one of the perils of going for bigger rims ), also the 205-65 size wasn't easy to be able to just walk into a tyre centre and get them off the shelf.

This time around i found that 215-65-16 were alot easier to find and opted for some Continental Vancos, they seem to be wearing alot better and have far better traction in the wet and at much the same cost as the Goodyear's if you shop around.

Also, those of you putting rims on bigger than 16", are you using commercial tyres or car tyres ???

What is the best tyre's for you guys and girls ???

i have currently got pirelli citynet's :D excellent all rounder only£38 each :D and there grippy too and so far they havent shown many signs of wear :D i used to have goodyear cargo's when i got the van but they wore out in 2000miles   excellent grip but expensive and they dont last long :(

my dads got these, kumho tyres there £30 each from a local tyre shop and there crap :( lock up all the time in the wet round the edge off really easy on roundabouts but cheap and cheerful i suppose :P

I have always used Continental Vancos and over the years must have had near on 30 of them fitted to various vans. Can't say i've ever worn one out normally have them changed to to punctures.

Michelin Agilis seem to last the longest for me but prices vary from £60 to £120 for the same tyre  so worth shopping around :D

A tip I was given by an ex tyre fitter was, you will get a better deal if you ring around, rather than you simply pull in. As they are keen to get you into their shop and stop you going to their competitors

I ran Michelins on my last Range Rover, they wear well, they grip well, and they don't go out of shape when they get a bit of age. I got 50,000 miles out of the last set and I don't drive it particularly gently! Guess what I replaced them with...

Hankooks are fitted as original equipment on quite a few Transits and I haven't heard a bad report about them.

I've finally persuaded to get my mother to replace her Pirellis with Michelins on her Volvo 960 3 litre 24valve auto, and she say's it's like a different car. The Pirellis gave a hard ride and followed every rut in the road surface. (I wouldn't fit them on a wheelbarrow!)

I would suggest that cheap isn't necessarily good value, particularly if you're keeping the van for a while. Good Year and Bridgestone aren't a bad tyre but I would recommend Michelin every time.

p.s. good advice about ringing round first too!

Just had Semperit (made by Continental) 205/70R14 97R's fitted to my new (used) alloy wheels. Not a bad price £220 fitted and balanced but I have yet to find out how they feel on the bus. Have done 6,000 miles on the winter tyres Vredestein SnowTrac 195 x 14's. They are true snow tyres and are quite noisy on tarmac but give very good grip in the wet and were excellent in the snow in Austria.

i lived in germany for a while. all the krouts had two sets of wheels and tyres. old steel wheels with winter tyres, and posh wheels with low profiles for summer use.

Hi Bondy,

Yep, thats the same as me. Two sets of wheels for ease of changing. 3 years living in Norway has got me into the habit of changing to Winter tyres (plus the fact that we use the bus to go skiing). Have the same set up for the car as well.
