Ebay Transit 100 LWB

Postby MrBlueSkye » Wed May 11, 2005 3:55 pm

Hi all, I am wondering if I have dropped a bollock. At the end of March I bought a 2.5 Diesel Transit 100 LWB. I was a bit desperate for transport as my wagon had been knicked a month previous and my jobs were piling up and excuses for not doing them running out. Anyway I saw an R reg on ebay going for 2200 that looked in pretty good shape and ended up buying it. I got a little twang when the guy told me upon purchasing it that he was moving house the next week, and wondered why he had mentioned it. Anyway apart from a few smallish problems the van has been running fine, and I have been pleased with the purchase. 2 weeks ago I emailed the guy to ask him for some details on the van and he has not replied, I also notice now that he has become deregistered on Ebay. Anyway......to the point. I have driven 242 miles so far in the van and last week I noticed a couple of times that I was having problems getting it easily into 5th gear.this seemed to clear up until today.I set of to Bolton and while doing about 40mph noticed a grinding noise in fifth gear, then I lost fifth gear. It now works fine in 1st thru 4th but when I put it into fifth there is no power when I step on the accelerator. It dfoesn't grind when I engage it into fifth, just doesn't connect with the power train. Does anyone have any opinions as to what might be the problem and how much it might cost to fix?

Mate, i never bother rebuilding transit boxes there's too many 2nd hand ones about yours is an MT75 and its not too dificult a job to change it - there also not too heavy with there alloy casing - ive done one from underneith laying on my back - lifted it in to position :D bit tight but if theres 2 of you its alot easyer!
You should get one from £20 there fitted in most di's from about 1990
Its best to get one from a seller you trust or drive the van 1st

Just check the gear stick is bolted in correctly 1st - you never know!

Hope that helps!

Ps i'd do the clutch plate aswell - always worth it while when the box is off!
:D

I completely agree with Luke, but MT75s are cheap up north!! Just get a 2nh hand box and swap it. As to the ebay thing, as long as that's all you find wrong, and the paperwork is in order, forget about it, that's the thing about buying stuff 2nd hand, no matter how you find the thing in the first place.

hi mate, gearboxes are reasonably cheap up here(north). i have to agree, would make sense to think about changing the clutch and also the rear crank oil seal if thier is any sign of oil in that area. changing the gearbox itself isnt really a big job if u are mechanically minded. i changed my clutch in my lunch break at work, only took me 45 minutes but then i have the use of power tools and 4 post ramp. let us know how much u get the box, clutch etc. for mate! :D :D :D

Thanks guys, must admit my arse has been going a bit as one guy on a car maintenance newsgroup told me to look at about £1500 for replacement and labour. and as I am bouncing along the bottom at the moment I had to scrape the £2200 together to buy it in the first place.
I'm Manchester based so any recommends for gearboxes or transit mechanics in the area appreciated.

Also how much would I be looking to pay for having someone change the gearbox for me (I'm a good welder but a shite mechanic)
Thanks for the advice!

(Looks like I'll have to get the old girl to dust of the mattress and cash register)

 i bet his local garage love it when he comes round!!
Mate, fair enough if you dont fancy DIY then, i'd got to a local garage get a price for doing the swap, then get a 2nd hand box out of the local free ads or try a local breaker! I wouldnt bother with a gearbox specialist just swap it and bin the old one :D
