Ever left your fuel cap on the pump?

Neither had I until recently.

Since I bought the van last year and got it on the road this summer, its had a plastic "get you home" style fuel cap on it. You know, the ones that you can't lock or leave your keys in to remember you've left it on the pump! Well having had a bad day at work, I popped by the petrol station to get £20 of diesel, ripped the badly fitting cap out and threw it in anger on top of the fuel pump. Having juiced up and paid off I went.

So off I go, round a roundabout and do a 270 degree spin on my own diesel slick, taking out a small sign in the process! Came to a stop, facing the outside of the roundabout, took a look at the now crippled sign on the roundabout, not hanging about longer than I had to steered hard right and off I go. Woooops!!! Probably lost about £5 of fuel and felt rather guilty about leaving a slick on every right hand corner on the way home. I only realised i'd forgotten the filler cap when I got home, wondered how I managed to spin a transit on a hot sunny day!

And the ironic thing? I've been driving round for about a month or so with a Capri locking fuel cap which i've now found out just happens to fit!

Moral of that story??? Being a cheap b*stard and not forking out for a proper fuel cap costs fuel..................and sign posts!!!

Sounds like you were the type of person who caused an accident down my way last weekend, at the very least a New Discovery was trashed and a Mondeo's front lower wishbone mangled. Ok you have learnt your lesson but how many people have you potentially hurt in the process, that is why those caps are 'get you home' only. Try taking an MOT with one on.

Calm down Mark, a mistake is exactly that, he didnt leave the cap on the pump on purpose!

I have left my cap on the pump a few times, but I never get anywhere cos as I try to drive off I realise I aint got any ignition keys

I already have and it passed. It's not one of the push in ones, its got three legs that pull the cap on when you twist the screw in the middle. If it fastens up and seals, it passes.

Ok you have learnt your lesson but how many people have you potentially hurt in the process.

No more than all the dangerous drivers we have down here, especially the old people in autos who stamp on the wrong pedal. There's at least 2 accidents a month because of this, not to mention all the boy racers in their Saxos and Clios..........
Silly mistake to make I know and its the first time it's ever happened to me. When you're tired and stressed though, everyone makes mistakes..........

I don't think that was the type of cap MarkM (and me) were thinking of. I think he means the push in only plastic typr won't pass the MOT, which it wont. I have to say though that many people misunderstand the MOT/petrol cap thing. It doesn't have to lock, as long as it's secure and seals.

Perhaps not, trust me that was an editted version of what I wanted to post. But something like that isn't something you admit to online. All the caps on every vehicle I have ever owned have been lockable and as you say you can't do this (leave behind) since your keys are attached.
All phones can set to make 'private' calls so a report of the Diesel spill would have been easy, what happened down here took a minimum of 2 accidents before anything was done and even then it took 2 hours to get a grit truck out

Correct Fred, the Green or Black push on as sold in petrol stations, generally with red fins, which are simply 'get you home/emergency' caps only. With the costs of ALL fuels these days a lockable cap is a must, still can be got around but anything to slow the b*stards down! Plus again as Rover has said you have to be extremely clever to drive off without the fuel cap if it is a real locking one.

I've hit a diesel spill before, luckily I got off lightly with cuts and bruises and only a few hundred pound worth of damage, but I know people who weren't so fortunate

I had a bad accident 2 years ago on a motorbike due to someone spilling fuel/oil over the road..I wasnt laughing though...Mind you i have done the same with 1 of the lorrys once..never done it again though..
Still you wont do it again in a hurry.

Can't believe I'm reading this, it's bad enough spilling diesel but not even bothering to report it?

It wasn't a case of "not bothering", considering the circumstances (a bent sign) it was better not to.
