New Log Book

Postby FredTransit » Tue Jun 14, 2005 10:44 pm

I have just seen an advert on TV that says the old log books are not valid after 1 July. Does this mean that all log books have to be replaced, even if the vehicle is not being sold? What about classics under reconstruction, that may have papers that are lost? Is this some way of clearing some old regs off the computer, and getting rid of a few hundred (thousand) classic vehicles? I tried an internet search but bizarrley didn't come up with much. Anybody know anything about this?

The only new log books we have are from recently aquired vans. Does this have to be done before 1 july? I am worried, cos there are some regs I wouldn't like to loose, but the vans are not on the road or sorn, if you know what I mean................ Including out orange one!!! Does the van drop off the computer if there is no new log book issued, and will there be any crap about the sorn when it comes back?

Yeah fred what you need to do is SORN all the vans you want to keep!
What ive done is SORN'd all my vehicles that arnt on the road at the same time so i only have to send all the SORN's off once a year and in one envelope!!

I have heard stories about fines etc for not keeping SORN's upto date and people loosing reg plates etc

just checked all my vehicles have the new style log book now - i'd guess if you SORN them they will automatically send you the new style log books!! :D

The thing is, none of the one that are on the road have got new log books, all of them taxed (work vans). Don't have a log book for the camper. Have a couple of log books I wouldn't want to loose for sentimental reasons. What if you find the most lovely transit in a barn somewhere after the 1 july, and it's got an old log book? This is serious.

Yeah, but my point is, that if the previos (long gone, maybe dead, emigrated, whatever) didn't get a new log book, but it has an old one, will the reg get taken off the computer, never to exist again?

I emailed DVLA about the new log books, as we have 2 cars under restoration (haha). They were taken off the road pre SORN(31/1/98) so we didn't have to declare them as off road. They have said if we do not anticipate them being back on the road before 31 May 2006 then to get a new V5C send the V5 and a covering letter to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1BA. If you want the old V5 back then send a covering letter requesting this and a new V5C to Customer services (VCS) DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR. Hope this is of some help to some of you.
