I have to agree there are some absolutely cracking roads down there, and more than a few scary ones too :)
Went on the river road out of Wanganui a few times, and that was pretty 'interesting', but the one that really had me bricking it was driving up Ruapehu from Ohakune. Wet, foggy, up in the clouds, single track road, no barriers and practically no verge, a huge drop off the side, and everyone driving down from the other direction like they were in the World Rally Championship

Change of underwear was definitely needed after that!

I had a spot of bother up that mountain road one winter...
headed up in the Mk2, didn't notice the 'chains only' sign, overlooked the road closed one...
was too busy admiring the white land scape,
white road even...
van started slowing down a bit, then a bit more...
realised with no little trepidation that this due to total wheelspin...
all forward motion ceased and the roll back bagan
managed to avoid the icey death in gully and backed a couple of miles to the "not past this point' sign
tried to be good ever since

Pete
Well frightening   Let's hope you stay good :!: :D

For those who wondered where we were talking about, this is Ruapehu.

Just over 9000ft, and regularly blows her top - last eruption in 1995 I think. Her neighbour was used as Mount Doom in the LOTR films.
