Big Blue Converted and well established

Postby SparkyDuke » Tue Feb 03, 2026 5:20 pm

I joined the Transit forum in 2023 after buying an old Mk4 mini bus, with a view to converting it to a camper. Near on three years later and after several trips (Scotland, Spain, France) i thought i would share what I have accomplished with Big "Old" Blue.

As he was when we bought him.

And Still Tweaking But He is Functional

We have put almost 15K on Big and he still runs like a dream, the only issue we encountered was a failing Catalytic Converter, which i am in the process of trying to replace (any ideas on that would be helpful). Looking forward to our next trip this year, probably back to Scotland and another jaunt to the Med.

looks great now mate  they are never finished, you'll be fettling for years
does it need a cat ? i thought the requirements for cats was 95 on ? before that as long as it passes emmisions you can remove it IIRC ? mind you a pinto probably needs one to pass emmisions, they wernt the cleanest engines, the 8V twink was better in that reguards.

Thanks bortaf, yes I suspect i will be tweaking for years to come
I probably could have got away without a CAT but as you suggest, I most definitely would have been gassing most of my neighbours, while destroying my carbon footprint, without a CAT

Managed to find an after market one with some help from some of the guys on the forum.
