My mk5 ex BT transit overnight sleeper and shed-on-wheels

Postby moojuice » Sun Sep 17, 2006 4:45 pm

Well i've finally got round to taking some pics of my van and uploading them to flickr, so here goes:

Obligitory front side and back views.
Image
Image
Image

She's only done 40k miles. Have fitted a JVC cd player and brought an expensive bit of plastic from Halfords (they didn't have black ones and didnt have the time to spray it up)

Image

The eberspacher - my favourite toy on the van. Unlike the old escort van, I will never have to drive to work in a cold damp van ever again!

Image

Only a little rust mark in the footwell - will get that rubbed and sprayed up soon.
Image

Everything including the kitchen sink - hot water provided by the eberspacher and engine. BT racking removed (weighed too much and was re-homed in part down dad's shed). Theres a 2 ring camping cooker thats gonna sit next to the sink soonish.

Image

Genuine axminster carpet (mum didnt like the colour after a few months and gave this to me), a few shelves and a seat also installed. She's all ply'ed out except for the sliding door - still havent decided about that yet.

Image
Image

The seat is easily removed and is only for sitting on when parked up. It came out of dad's MK3 transit years ago.

A set of component drawers too, to store little fiddly bits in, with homebrew door to keep things in place.

Image

I kept the BT safe boxes too and mounted one to the walls in the back.

Image

And a fire extinguisher inbetween the seats in the front, as my escort van once had smoke billowing from the vents -that was only the battery terminals touching the bonnet but it frightened me enough to keep an extinguisher on me from now on!

Image

To do:
*Re-fit the 12v accessory outlet in the back

*Rub down and respray a couple of rusty dings in the bodywork

*Install a better cd player - or create an mp3 playback system using an old computer and keep the jvc head unit and just use it for radio / amp.

*Maybe install a small cctv camera at the rear to help reversing.

*Possibly fit a radio like aerial to the roof - ive just brought one that can pick up freeview and theres a 5 inch colour tv waiting to be used :)

Looking good mate. I'd love to buy a Mk5 ex-bt but ive got no use for one at the moment. Like the toilet and sink. You use it for work?

I don't use her for work - she gets used for carrying logs for the open fire, and for my other half to do woodturning. She also gets used as a shed because I havent got my own shed in a garden! She'll also be used as an overnight campervan to kip in when im too tired to drive home form anywhere.

After having an escort van (given to me after I passed my test), ive found vans to be far more useful than a car would to me, so I merely upgraded to something bigger and better :) It also means that I'm not a taxi service to all and sundry with just the 2 passenger seats!

I managed to haggle the dealer down from £4k plus vat to £4k including, and he replaced the front arches, resprayed them in and took out the single passenger seat for a double one from a V reg telewest transit he also had there. It also had a service, cambelt change, the usuals.

Im fairly happy with her, and I think, if i'm right, I'm getting 25-28MPG pottering about town. Havent got any idea on the motorway mileage yet as i rarely travel the distance.

I have noticed that she can be a little strange first thing in the morning, selecting 2nd gear feels a little harder than usual but once ive changed gear again she's fine. And a couple of times when pulling away she'll judder quite heavily, but I think that's a case of too much clutch and too little gas.

Ohh and I need to get a new back door seal for the right hand door as it has been ripped a little along the top. Apart from that, Im happy.

4K is pretty good. Hard to find a decent Mk5 with low mileage now. Its easy to see why Telewest hang on to these vans.
