most of it was paper work and checking the i had all the right books
had 2 hours of testing to show them even though i have a 2391 which is only 2 years old so was done in the new colours !!
as far as the installation goes if it follows bs 7671 you will be ok!!

 I'm building a garage/workshop can anyone tell me if I can do any of the wiring myself or do I now have to pay a sparky to do every thing I've done a fair bit over the years but dont have any quallifications etc  I've read through the building regs but never read anything that contradicts it self so much

it still seems to be a grey area. im sure if you did the work and your 'competent' that you would be able to get a sparky to come and certificate it afterwards. I do loads of test and inspections and at the end of the job they get a certificate. I dont see why they shouldn't if its all tested out ok. Just bare in mind that it will need testing and inspecting BEFORE you switch anything on

Thanks mate :D Just remember when your doing it that it has to 'work' if you make space for something that you need all the time then its no good putting it behind everything else and also try to distribute the weight evenly. I cant work out of a van that isn't sorted now! Good luck with it :D

when you come to do the wiring, you also have to make sure the rest of the house bonding and earthing is up to scratch. there is nothing stopping anyone doing their own wiring, but as crazyscoot said. you can get a spark round to pass it off. i have the same problem at the mo. ive spoke to a couple of sparks about doing the testing and certification, and they all say theyre not interested. the best route is through the local building control office. it depends how fussy they are though. if they want to be real twats, there are other building regs that are relevant. ie where you can and cant drill holes in joists. my wifes mums neighbour in bristol did his own wiring for a loft conversion. he drilled through the joists and fitted all the cables. build control man made him change the joists which he had only just fitted 2 weeks earlier. absolute freakin nightmare

Your spot on Bondy  Ive always found that the building inspector is either your best mate or your worst nightmare :? Experience says that if the inspector says to do something then dont argue that its ridiculous and start to condescend him, just do it with a smile. If you start to argue the toss they WILL dig deeper and they Will find something else
What a lot of sparks do if something like an extension is being built is to run a new sub-main in from the incoming service. Doing this allows you to certify what you have done but it doesn't bring the rest of the property into the test and inspect. I will always tell the customer this so that they are fully aware that if i extend the existing wiring out to the extension then it will bring the whole house into the equation and it can open a can of worms they may not wont to know about. I will always upgrade the earthing as a matter of coarse.

ive just fitted a kitchen for my mum. (another freeby) luckily, we never had to mess about with the wiring but we replaced the old 4mm bonding with 10mm to the water supply.

More money to the CITB and hassle I have one go for a health and safety test, pay £35.00 for it then x amount for the card and also if you did an apprenticeship a proper one with City and Guilds etc like i did they dont like you ! you need NVQ's ! another money making thing etc.

However if you arrive in this country tho you get them

if u break an existing circuit and extend it your not responsible for the rest of the house only that circuit /rcd test bonding checks and earth measurements all of which you would have to do anyway even if putting another circuit in .also installing another circuit is notifiable work either to your registered company napit/niceic or elecsa who i am with if your not registered then lbc and they will ask for proof of part p.
