I've just done light smoke on my van, both fronts and quarter lights 8) a couple of people i know have been stopped by the plod for dark tints, one had limo black  and the other dark smoke, i had dark smoke on our people carrier, but at night you can't see out of the passenger window properly, i think the old bill shine a torch through and use some sort of filter, that has to show 70% light :!:

I got a mirror silver tint for mine with the intention of putting that on the front but was warned of using it by a tinting company, I have since seen a few cars using it on the fronts though so I might give it a go and play dumb.

Dave if your side and rear windows are done in limo tint, if you use a light tint in the front, looking at it it will appear darker, but from the inside you will have good visabiltiy

by law you can not have any tint on the front windows, if you have light smoke 30%-35% you can get a £40 pound fine and told to remove it.

if you go dark smoke 20%-25% you can get 3 points, they will put their light meter on your windows and measure the vlt (visible light transmisson) across three points and hand you a lovely yellow producer.

how do i know? i tint windows and i have been pulled in my old grey van .
in which i had the windscreen tinted with 35% and the front side windows that measured 3.7% VLT he he.

didnt get three points even though they tried but got a £190 fine

Tint is security tint from screwfix, costs about £7 a roll. Police make nearly everything illegal to do with cars  When i get stopped i'll just remove it. Brother got told to remove his tint a while back, was told to remove on the spot no fine or take it off later, fine. Supose it depend on your attitude or the officer.
