The £25 tranny!

Postby MarkG » Mon Nov 06, 2006 1:43 am

Hey,

I posted up in the welcome section about a week or so back now. I payed £25 for the beast you see before you! Its even MOT'd till april! everything works and it runs good, with the exception of a loud arse ticking top end! 2.0 litres of pinto madness, get in!! :o

Front profile, isnt she a honey!

The wheel arch of doom with a bit of grey primer thrown in for good measure.

And finally an arse shot, complete with crushed bumper!

Already given her an oil change today. I was supposed to do it saturday but the sump plug was totally seized on and rounded off. I filed two flat edges on the nut and its now a perfect 10mm spanner fitment. :) Still couldnt budge the bitch though nearly snapped the spanner on it. I was pretty pissed off by this stage and i gave in.

So today the blow torch came out! Heated the crap out of it, and it came out like a charm! Popped a new filter on and filled her up with some mineral goodness.

Now i dont feel so bad beating on her, already had the arse end stepping out on roundabouts, ha ha! I really diddnt think she would be able to do it.

Will tackle the cylinder head next i think, its sounding worse than a diesel at idle, but its constant. I may just chuck another head on it, not sure yet

£25 is a bargain, the hasp and staple on the back door is worth £2 and the tow ball cover at least £3.50!

£25 Bargain :!:

Dont bother swapping engines, run and use the van and when you've finished with it, weigh it in. You'll probably get about £60 for it..

And the rest, those back doors are worth easily double the price paid for the van, given the state of the body (which I don't think is too bad for what we can see) I seriously doubt they are the orginal doors anyway

Maybe!
By "weigh it in" i meant, scrap it. not strip it for bits. i sold a LWB G reg 2.0 deisel few months ago on ebay for £120, no mot or Tax. Scrap it was only worth £60.
In my title i listed it as Engine and Gearbox, complete with free van.. so it could be heard running, to this day im amazed with ebay as the guy came from devon way in a taxi to cardiff. swapped cash and drove it home...

I knew you meant the weight of the body etc, a scrappy isn't going to bleat about the rear doors not being on the van so sell the doors on ebay and weigh the rest in you might lose a tenner as it doesn't have any rear doors but consider the selling value it's a no brainer.
My last Transit I sold the rear doors, the security grills, the passenger door, stripped the dash of all the black parts, kept the glove box door and hinges, kept the door cards and every grab handle I could remove, sold the Instrument cluster, kept the steering wheel, removed the bulkhead (fitted it in the new van), sold the wing mirrors, sold the grill, sold the bumper end caps, finally got the shell towed away for free, only regret was not removing the towbar as it was an ex-bt van (petrol power for any of those people who say BT only used diesel ;) ) the towbar was the big tubular version with the twin steps, but oh well I will know for next time. Total money back was just shy of £200 so all in all a good deal. I had the van for 5 years and only paid £600 in the first place, other than tires it had cost me nothing, except servicing...actually thinking not true I replaced the passenger door and the rear doors and the front disks (needed them, but ebay was the source for them, a pair for less than the price Fords wanted for one..add the vat on and it was an even worse cost from Fords) but pennies in the averall scheme of things.
I wish I could buy Transits like the one in this thread for £25 as I would buy one a week and strip it, I would have a brand new Transit within a year of doing that.

I tided her up a bit more today. Went to town on the arches and roof guttering with some rust neutralizer. I know the rust will come back, i just want to hold it back for maybe a couple of extra months. Plus the grey primer was starting to really bug me. Anyhow its now gone. White primered over the rust neutralizer makes it look a tad more respectable.

I swear neighbours curtains have been twitching every time i park up or drive off! There all a bunch of snobs where i live anyway, im actually enjoying pissing them off. ha ha.

Will get some more pics if anyone is intrested.

Looks worth the money to me and you could spend a bit customising without feeling guilty :D . Course only worth the money if it had a full fuel tank   . Only kidding its great for the dosh, by the way primer lets moisture through so please dont make the same mistake as they have, it will only rust again.
