My 1971 Mk1 German Feuerwehr von Metz (Firetruck)

Postby BUDGIE » Mon Nov 20, 2006 6:15 pm

Well, I bit the bullet & went to Germany to get a rust-free Mk1 LWB Van.
Its a Feb 1971 German Feuerwehr (Firewagen) with a 1.7V4 converted by the Metz company. Has 10473km (6507 miles) on the clock with full service history. Was with the Gaiganz Fireservice until 2003, then with the guy I bought it off until last Friday.
Absolutely no rust holes anywhere (front x-member & spring mounts are as they left the factory), & only a few stone chip type scabs on the rear arches. Interior has all the fittings for the Fireservice - even still has a couple of fire hoses - but no pump or other 'removeables'. Still has the (working) ladders, blue lamp & twin-tone horns!

For the number crunchers:
Miles driven: 602. Hours driven (inc stops): 16.5. Total fuel used: 33.19 Gall. Fuel consumption at avge 55mph: 18mpg. Total fuel cost: £160.68.
Flight to Germany: £61. Eurotunnel: £59. German export plates/paperwork etc: £35. Insurance & Recovery cover: £35.

Future plans:
Remove ladders & light from roof. Remove interior fittings. Fit Recaro seats front & rear to make a proper 4 seater, fabricate bulkhead behind rear 2 seats. Board out rear cargo section. Fit Towbar (anyone got one?).
Possible thoughts: Fit 2.8V6 & large bore exhaust system. Convert to RHD.

You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.
