mk1 for rally service van conversion

Postby auldescort » Tue Jun 09, 2015 4:02 pm

Always wanted one so have done it and bought this byooty for conversion to rally service van. Question is do I leave LHD and think an engine change will be on the cards for towing purposes.

Just found a old copy of classic ford.

Sadly no pictures of a mk1 transit.

went for mot this morning for DVLA import purposes and it passed with flying colours. Unbelievably good underside for a 44 year old van, Looks like 4 years old !

The looks i got driving it to mot station . Not sure if it was because of what it was or that it had no number plates !

Yank out that V4, and fit a 3.0 V6 at a minimum, or maybe a modern turbodiesel or V8? Leave it LHD, I think you will find most of the original rally barges were LHD anyway, as most rallies were on the continent. They might be nice old vans, but not exactly practical with that wheezy 1.7 V4. Fit power steering while you are at it too, and air con ;) I have a Mk1 with flat front and a 302 V8. Needed quite a large engine cover inside the cab, but it does work.

Dont personally think the 3l v6 is worth the effort., If I am going to the bother of altering things , it will be for something with plenty of grunt !

agree 100% there! Check out my new tow vehicle, has a 3.8 Buick V6 fitted. Over 200hp and 230 ft.lbs, and with injection makes it quite economical too. Has more than enough grunt for towing :)

That's lovely!

If you are getting rid of the fire equipment it has left in it, give me a shout if want to keep my 78 as a Firevan, so want to fill it back up with the Fireworks Equipment :-)

It is full of equipment.Hoses , connectors , axes , helmets , torchs etc etc. Again , its too good to convert really.

Not sure what I am doing with it.Have advertised it but if I decide to go ahead and convert it , will give you first chance of all the gear thats in it.
