The Mk3 has landed -new pics

Postby fastmower » Wed Nov 07, 2007 9:10 pm

Hi all,

Pleased to report that the Mk3 from Vanmad down the south side of Brum has landed today. Sorry some of the pics are a little dark - it's because it was getting - errr - a little dark!

Here's what she arrived on:

Image

Needs a bit of time with a hose and some shampoo, as she's been stored in a barn for quite a while - but sure we can manage that!

Battery dead as a door post, so haven't had chance to see if she'll go yet. Needs most of the exhaust, and possibly a new manifold if I can't get the broken studs out - previous one was stolen, along with the oil filler cap and drivers seat!! Some people eh

Water level was very low - nothing in the header tank, and some of the hoses around the engine felt "crunchy" - although they don't appear to be cracked or perished or anything. Is this likely to be dried rust on the inside, or the actual inside of the pipe itself going all dry and cracking? Either way I'll make sure it has a proper good flushing before we start it up. Oil looks clean and is at the right level. Very little rust anywhere on the body - all sorted before she went into storage - nothing in any of the usual spots. Underneath looks good too from a quick look while she was still on the truck - doors are solid :P :P Ran a finger along the bottom edge of the rear doors and they're smooth as a baby's bum. Tidy.

Vanmad chucked two leather electric front seats out of a Granada (I think) Don't know whether to stick them in the County or in this one - as we wanted to change the County to two singles in the front anyway.

Only other thing is it looks really dinky at the side of the County - made me smile :)

Not been a bad day at all today!

I'll keep you posted with pics etc as we get her back on the road.

Cheers,

Andy

Cheers guys - I'm well chuffed with it to be honest -but I can see trouble ahead as I know already I won't want to part with her once the County is sorted. Wonder if I can get away with keeping two vans?

Anyway - quick question! Just been having a look through all the paperwork and what have you that came with the van - and noticed that on the new keepers bit of the V5 - the details have the van as a 1993cc petrol. Can one of you clever lot tell from the reg if this is just a mistake, or has it been re-engined at some stage? I'm fairly confident of my ability to tell a diesel from a petrol engine

Quite a lot of old MOT's with it too - and possibly one confused tester - it was doing fairly average mileage each year until 2001, when it did over 300,000 miles in the year :o The year after it must have done the same trip backwards as the mileage came back down to about 80k

Cheers guys,

Andy

According to the DVLA, it's a 1993 petrol and you're SORN'd till 1/4/2008.
In a MK6 280 SWB semi hi!!!!

Cheers Chadmat - the SORN dates agree with what I've been told - but I guess I'll need to have a word with DVLA about the engine. Is there any way of finding out if the van was originally petrol - ie - if the DVLA record was correct but someone has changed it without informing them?

Cheers mate,

Andy

Thats exactly what will have happened  90% of the Mk3 minibuses were Pinto engined to start with.

Hi mate,
Why does it look a lot more at home outside? I guess i am only used to seeing her surrounded by tractors and farm vehicles lol.Good luck wth it mate.I can answer your question about the engine mate as i did change her from petrol to diesel about two years ago.The engine is a 2.4DI which i salvaged from a 1986 model that was being scrapped.I have indicated this on the V5 section that i sent to DVLA yesterday.
If i can help you with anything else you need to know just give us a shout.

Regards Vanmad :) :)

Cheers Alan - that's that one solved then!

This might also explain why there's a flame plug on the manifold - but no connections to it and no circuit tester thingy below the battery!

One more I've found today though - it seems to have TWO heater resistors - both with wires going to them. One is at the back of the offside headlight - same place more or less as the Mk5 - and the other is in just about the same location behind the nearside headlight. Any ideas on that one?

Left that battery on charge overnight and it's holding some juice - took ages for the charge indicator needle to move up the dial but it's making progress - and I've got it on charge again now. Starter motor seems to be stuck though, so I'll have to whip it off. Definite solenoid clicking noise when the ignition is turned but nothing else. Would have had a go at bumping it but no-one else in the plant today and loads I should have been doing anyway!

Once it can be started I'll put it away in the unit overnight until it's ready for the road - wouldn't want her catching a cold would I?!

I'll keep you posted!

Cheers mate,

Andy

Well a bloody good start to today

Pulled into the yard at 6.45 this morning and saw Kev from the unit next door peering into the van - then saw the glass on the floor. Some thieving little scrotes put the drivers window through and nicked the leather seats  They'd done his battered Mk6 too which was a complete waste of time and effort as he removed ALL the interior and power washed it a couple of days back - and I assume they'd have had a torch as it was already dark when I left work the night before - so they could have shone it inside and seen it was empty.

Dragged her inside tonight with the forklift and a trolley jack under the front axle - as I didn't have the keys today - as I was intending going down at the weekend to get the starter sorted out and give her a wash.

Wish I'd caught the little furkers - we have some very unpleasant machinery in the plant and the first anyone would have known about it would be when small pieces of them started showing up in China....

Ah well - worse things happen at sea and all that...
