FredTransit's Tipper

Postby FredTransit » Sun Apr 16, 2006 11:13 pm

Well, I've done it again. Here's the latest, somthing a bit different, a 1985 LWB tipper. Two owners from new, with the seller being the second owner since 1989. She actually started life as a luton (!), with the tipper being put on when the previous owner took her on. Everything works, she has tax till the end of the month and three months test, I reckon she will pass but I am not completely happy with the brakes and the cam (pinto) rattles outrageously. We can't decide to call her Bobbie (the builder) or Jan, cos it's on the number plate.

The rotting wood that lines the bed has to go (never had a transit infested with woodlice before!), the passenger step needs some work, the chassis already has had some, but won't need any more in the near future. The vinyl driver's seat is sh*gged, but I would like to replace it with a good one, as it's right for a tipper. The dash is bizarreley warped, due to a welding accident, but I have one of those. I have already fixed one of the indicators (bulb), treated the rust on the passenger mirror and replaced one of the window winder handles. Just hours after she came to us, I have already had an offer for her, a good home too, another transit nutter with a SWB pickup, a landscape gardener. Don't think I will sell though. Tomorrow she will go back to 'work', we are clearing the front yard and now don't have to dirty up the lutons! Oh, and she won't be white for long, art directors hate white........

Luke the doors don't look like they have had any work. She's a bit rough round the edges, but no more than you would expect for 17 years work with a builder. The only thing I don't get is the temp gauge is permanantly over the hot end, but the engine seems normal, has enough water (even with antifreeze!), doesn't pink or blow smoke. The heater doesn't work at all, so no putting that on to see if it makes a difference. Well if the transport or film businesses go belly up, I can always go into tarmacing.....

It's suprising how you find the room, and some of ours are out with drivers. We have room for 6 on our land, and one (custom) has nearly taken root at our body man's, and we have 3 permits for on the street, with others on temp permits. We will have to find some storage soon though.
