Rovers been on holiday and so has his van

Postby rover » Mon May 01, 2006 6:15 pm

While I was away the old gal was in the body shop.

New drivers side front arch (not the wing that was new a couple of years ago).

Image

And a new rear arch on the passenger side, and the tops of the rear doors. Oh yeah, I had the front doors done too, had them weld a plate on the inside to stop the damn things from splitting!

Image

None of it looked too bad and most people would have left it for another couple of years yet, but I canr stand to see ANY rust spots at all

The front doors were splitting below the window strut, where they always go on MK3s and 4s, probably 5s too.

The guy that does my painting does a storming job, I'm well chuffed with it :D and all for £300 :D :D

Theory has it that if you drill a hole at the end of the crack, it stops it splitting further by relieving the pressure. I have never needed to test it out  !

Thats a recognised way of doing it Fred, but I thought welding might be a more permanent option..... 40mmx40mmx1.8mm plate inside each door, the buggers wont split again

I didnt realise how rare the MK3s were getting (probably cos the majority were utter crap  ), I have done just over a thousand miles down to and around Cornwall and back in the last week and have seen far more Mk2s than Mk3s

 More Mk2s than Mk3s? My theory is that during the 80s (and this goes for the Mk2 as well), everybody had loadsa money, and just got rid of vans when they got a bit old, ie the ashtray was full.

Its either that or they were made from that crap Spanish reclaimed steel that Ford were so fond of using in the late eighties

.........like the Mk1s around 1976? Something to do with the steel strikes so I hear.
