Front or rear wheel drive Mk6 ?

Postby blue.van.man » Wed Feb 24, 2010 12:44 am

Hi,

I've seen some MK6 trannys at very attractive prices and as tidy Mk5's are still fetching reasonable money, I'm thinking maybe its time to swap. I understand that they do Mk6's as front wheel drive and rear wheel drive, Is one better than another ? or more prone to problems or more expensive to repair. I'm looking for a SWB or poss a MWB, not sure if they do these as RWD or not but any advice would be helpful.
Also what engine is best 2.0 litre or 2.4 litre ? and are all the 2.0's turbo'd. Any advice would be really helpful especially any bad things I need to watch out for on a MK6.

Thanks

Steve

All Mk6 diesels are turbo

The 2.0 is in FWD, the 2.4 in RWD models.

The FWD models offer a lower loading height, ie; less of a step up into the back of the van. If this is a concern, such as if you will lifting heavy stuff in and out all day, go for a FWD. If that isn't an issue, I would always go RWD.

IIRC, the FWD is only available in SWB models, low roof and semi-high roof.
