Which van do I need??????

Postby clono3535 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:07 pm

Hi people I need help!!!!!
I'm after a transit for a new company I'm starting up, but struggling to find what I'm looking for.
I've only got about 2k so was thinking about going to an auction to make my money stretch further, only problem is all the adverts for what's in stock is done by model numbers and I've not got a clue which model I want.
Ideally I want a medium wheelbase with a low roof and single side sliding door. I could be persuaded into a short wheelbase or at a big push a medium roof.
I also need it to have the 2.4 engine with as much power as I can get, which for my money would probably be the 115 bhp.
Does anyone know what model i.e. 280, 330. 350 etc. I need so can track exactly what I'm looking for down through the auction sites and not travel up and down the country wasting my time anymore.

All help is appreciated and thank you

In order to advise you what van to look for, what do you plan do with it? What do you plan to carry in it?
Oh and you dont get a medium wheel base low roof Mk6, and to get a swb 2.4 you would need to find a 330, most of these are 90ps, you will struggle to find a 115ps, especially on a budget of 2k

You would probably be better buying a FWD 2.0 100ps swb lowroof, either a 260/280 or 300, easier to find, cheaper to buy

You can't really tell from the model numbers whether the van is a SWB, MWB, or LWB, except that the higher capacities are generally the bigger vans. The same goes for the roof height except that certain combinations are just not available :!:

What sort of weight carrying ability do you really need :?:
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)
2004 Mk6 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.0 TDDi - Vantunered (Also gone)
2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

MWB with low roof is only available on the Mk7. This van is not available with the 2.4 engine.

Why is it you need the 2.4 engine?

Thanks to all so far. I'm an auto electrician and during the week I'm only going to be carrying about a ton or so in it, but need a reasonably low roof so I can fit a roof rack to stand on to fit light bars on the roofs of trucks. I'm, also on and off building sites working on the plant machinery, so need a reasonably high ground clearance (rear wheel drive advantage). But at weekends I need to fit 3 moto x bikes in it for racing. I know with the racking I won't get them in, so was going to get a twin axle box trailer for the bikes. Hence the 2.4 engine for the towing capabilities. I'm tempted towards a 300 what with the weight with trailer etc. on. Does this sound right???????

I dont think youll gain by going for 2.4 rwd, a 2.0 fwd will carry that weight no problem and tow the bikes no problem, it will cost more in fuel for RWD, generally you have less speed with RWD's, also with a low roof 2.4 RWD your load space is going to be very short, the FWD floor is 4" lower.
As you'll be on mud a lot i think you'd be better getting a 300 or 330 FWD should be slightly higher ride than the 260 and 280 FWD's, then fit some 16" rims from a RWD this will give better traction and raise it even more.
As said the 260,280,300,330,350 ratings are just weight ratings and not the model of van, theres literally millions of different combinations.
I'm sure ive seen a few Lwb MHR FWD, and RWD 280's. And also 350 RWD SWB LHR's.
but Mr M puk has a complete list of all different weights and dimensions i think.
