Obvious things to check when viewing?

Hi all,

Still have not got round to getting a Transit but really in need of one now,
I plan to start viewing some vehicles soon and I should have a mate who knows about vehicles coming with me but just in case I need to view without no one, what obvious things should a person who is not very mechanical look for?

I know I should carry out a dvla check on the reg number and I understand I can check the mot history but not so much about the engine etc.

If anyone could give me a few pointers of things I really should be checking that would be great,

Is light rust around the arches acceptable? If so, is it an issue I should look at getting resolved asap? What kind of price would that be on average per arch?

Good point on the standing oil leaks, will have a good look on the floor underneath.

Anything else?

I am still slightly confused about which model I will go for, although I think a semi-high will be ideal. With numbers like 123 330 - is this any connection with length?
