I found Transit 80 SWB SHR 1998-reg 2.5 diesel, 115K miles, with
service history from 71K miles. Owner just changed battery and starter
motor and is putting new alternator.
He wants £1700. What do you think, how much shall I offer him?
I believe £1700 is over the top, may be £1400 or may be less?
Looking forward for your comments, thanks!!!

Is this trade or private

Start at grand, he can only say yes or no, plus have the cash in hand so he can see it, greed always takes over when you start removing notes![]()
On paper (insurrance) it is worth the money but in real terms £1000- £1500 tops
Be aware that is the lowest weight version so for sure it will also be a 70ps, though you might be very lucky and it is a 85ps as Fords did a free upgrade around that time.
The alternator is a rather expensive part new so that is a possible worry off your mind. As long as you walk away from the deal happy it will be worth it to you as you will always find someone who has a cheaper/better van for sale later on.
Something is only worth a set amount of money if you can find the buyer for the item. I have a few so called 'rare' LP's but to be honest I would never find a buyer for them, but according to the books they are worth £50+ each, I would be lucky to get a £5 each for them in the real world.
Take a look at this http://www.fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13184 the person who posted the link is the owner so get in contact with him, the van was another forum members before him so all the 'what was done' is one heremight be a better van for you

It is also advertised in local Trade-it for £725, Do you think it would be a good (well, in a sense of trade-of between price and state/condition!) buy?
Much thanks!!!

£500 max, every panel has dents and cover ups, drivers seat needs replacing and it has glass in the rear doors (bad security I personally would never buy another van with glass in the back) the drivers side has already blown on the bottom edge, plus the doors are on the skew. Grill needs to be replaced, drivers front wing will need attention shortly, plus the step wing as well.
No mileage given so who knows what it has done...
It is easy to pull a listing apart but then you can always go and look at the van/s plus you haven't given a budget guide for any of us.
My own van a few would have said no to it but I paid peanuts for it, slowly but surely the cosmetic faults are being fixed, plus the van I had (for only 3 weeks) before it, paid for my new van plus the old transit I scrapped it part by part and the new one still hasn't cost me anything...including the purchase price, so in my case I am still in profit even with the parts I have changedMy last transit I had for 4 years and other than tyres, brakes and an exhaust it cost me nothing in that time.
johnnyshag's I seriously doubt you will go wrong with mainly because the history has been documented on here I have no clue on his asking price but I will think it is within your reach. plus it is the turbo version...ok has glass on the back but that's the trade off, the rest of the toys make up for it.

adamandy wrote:Well, the reliability of engine is top priority for me, I do not really care about dents, I can repair them gradually and do DIY respray... Do you think I can just buy this van for £500-£600 and drive it immediately 600 miles return? What top fault in engine I should look for?
Obviously, this orange tuned van is brilliant but asking price is a bit high (but still affordable) for me at the moment (however I am also thinking strongly cause I like this orange van). Buying johnnyshag's van will put some responsibility on me, cause it is too cool to drive recklessly
