Do Transits rust more than other vans or is this Myth?

Postby Richied » Fri Feb 29, 2008 10:20 pm

I'm in the process of sourcing a mk6 for a camper conversion and as I'm going to spend time and money kitting it out I'm going to want to keep hold of it.

The term 'Rust' sends a shiver down my spine and I wander if I'm better off looking at another base vehicle... SEVEL or German if a Transits going to turn to powder in no time...

Do Transits rust more than other vans or is this Myth?

Cheers, Rich

as much as i love the early transits i would have to admit that they do rot badly, and due to the design being basically the same from 1965 to 2000 the competition took advantage and although the mk1 and 2s were no worse than anything else of there day the mk5s were :(
but the mk6 is a major advance forward, although i would still give it a full chassis waxoil as i would if i bought any van :D

people do put a lot of emphasis on rust as if its the most important thing and the 1st sight of it means the end of a vans life - it can be fixed and plenty of vans get scrapped for other reasons spot the rust on this

the vast majority of transits are bought by businesses.......3 years....100,000 miles....written off as a tax loss.........there aint no need for them to last any longer!

I would like to add my opinion about this, I have two mk2's and mine I just bought it a few months ago. It belonged to an old man who owned it since he brought it as a second hand from GB 19 yrs ago and this van has always slept inside in a garage I think. The only rust it had is with the spring hangers , especially the front ones. My broyher's transit for some time about five years had slept outside in the salty conditions we have as Malta is an island too and had gone to in a desperate state. Then we had to change the under windscrren panel, footsteps, inserted a steel chanel in the chasis and so on.
I think there is a problem with the steel ford uses and in my opinion it should be made some mm thicker to prevent any craking. :( :?:

time to throw my humble opinion into the mix, yes transits do suffer with the old tim worm, around the arches mainly but! I still love them and so do milions of others why?

because apart from a bit if rust they are brilinat the best vnas ever made, you could have a shiny peugeout with not a smaer of rust and a knackerd engine and gear box!

Parts are plentifull and they are pretty easy to fix.

My advice buy the cleanest transit you can afford or find, give it a good steam clean underneath and a good waxoil a proper job in all the nooks and crannies door bottoms etc, payng particular attention to the arches..

I don't think you can do better than that, and be in the coolest van in history! or have less rust worries and look like a KNOB in VW or toyota

I think if I was going for a motor home I'd go for the Transit, it seems more solid a van to start with, Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer had too much body contortion and roll for my liking. I like the VW LT series but they're pricey to buy and maintain.

Yes about that Tinkadilli . I have my mk2 and I love him more than if I had a girlfriend
Here in malta the transit especially the mk1 and2's are vans which the working class can afford and give a reliable service. :P

They may not rust as badly if they were washed a bit more often

i think the way to go is wash it oftern witch you would beeing a motorhome  waxoil everywere its messy but worth it , and in the winter if you are out in it get a can of wd40 and spray all the arches and sills if you are going to not wash the road salt off!

the transit mk6 i think is better built rust wise as such but i have seen some starting to go about on the 51- 02 plates but these are mainly vans that are high miles and been worked hard!
also i think wight vans seem to be worse maybe this is because there is so many made as with a metalic colour maybe this helps abit! :?
