Mk 7 routine advice!

Postby BMXican » Fri Nov 16, 2012 12:20 pm

Hi all,

Am new to transits. Had a 2001 Merc Vito and its finally given up the ghost. Am looking to get a MK7 either 110 or 130hp (the 85 just doesnt have the guts for me) So as the topic name suggests, routine advice. The one im currently looking at is 135,000 miles, 2008, 110/280, what kinda stuff should I be looking for at this age/milage please? It has a full service history so what should I expect to have been done already? All advice very welcome

To save me writing it out again heres an old copied post of mine.........

Van worths vary wildly,a well loaded van will do alot more than a basic one.The best advice with a mk7 is to test drive it and not just a couple of miles.
a couple of questions you should get the answers to......
Does it tick over solid?
is it noisy under acceleration?
is there oil sitting round the injectors you can see (you will only see the outer 2) ?
does it rev smooth and strong to 4500rpm and above?
Knocks from the front?
How noisy is the egr when its turned off?

Body work is important to me but its not to everyone,a dent wont stop it doing its job some of the above might and without mechanical knowledge could cost large amounts of money. These engines can go bang but from what ive seen theres often symptoms before hand which has been ignored, the main one being the oil round the injectors which points to the injector seals leaking and watering down the oil.

Service history means very little to condition or mechanical problems, nor does mileage.A well looked after van thats done 100,000 on motorways can be a better bet than one thats done half that doing short town work.A van thats done short journeys is likely to have more seat wear etc and more likely to have had a much harder life.
Low milage vans will be more prone to rust.

Adding .............get a 130,better grin factor and mpg

Lovely, cheers for that. I'll make sure I have the list when I go to view. With regards to the EGR, are they easy to get at if they need replacing? My astra needed doing, garages quoted me £250-300, I got a genuine part online and did it myself for less than £100 and half hours work. Small jobs like that I can do. Also, is the 110 a six speed box as thats a deal breaker and totally forgot to ask. My vito is 5 speed and at 70-80 it sounds like its screaming its nuts off and thats a 110 engine too. I will do a search for the injector issue so I know where I'm looking. Thanks for the advice :0)

The Egr valves are easy to change, its best just to unplug them, they never wear out that way.

Now sure which vans have 6 speeds doubt the 2008 will but i dont know.Wanting a 6 speed is going to limit your market alot.5 speed FWD transits arnt screaming at 70/80

I just found the post in the FAQ section about the ford Etis thingy and all the ones im considering are 5 speed. I'm going to have to test drive it to see. I guess im tarring all 5 speeds with the Mercedes Vito brush! Thanks again for your time.

The six speed was NOT fitted to the 110ps or the 130ps FWD.

To get a six speed you need to look at 115ps and 140ps, which replaced the 110 and 130 respectively.

The 130 is known as the one most likely to suffer injector failure leading melted pistons and knackered engine. The 140 does not seem as bad for it.

Cheers for that ake. Had a drive about in a 5 speed 110 last night and was pleasantly surprised so I'm not too fussed by the gearbox now. Cheers for your help :0)

ain't the ratio for 5th in a 5 gear the same as 6th in a 6 gear?
at least thats been the consensus of this forum,

you don't get an overdrive at the 6th gear more like an additional 3rd gear

Dont be put off the 130's by the very misleading comment you always get one anti something on forums. The 130 is far better drive and much better on fuel than the 110 and you would have to be very very unlucky to have one go.Ive had several with no major problems at all and i currently own a 110 which will be the last 110 it is crap both to drive and on fuel in comparison.
The problem ake is talking about can happen to all the 2.2 engines even the lower powered ones right down to the 85 ps but dont let that influence your decision the 130 is a cracking engine and far far better than the 110 go and drive one before you dive in but do the checks i suggested.

As for the dodgy info on gear box ratios...............

6-spd van
1st 4mph/1000rpm
2nd 9mph/1000rpm
3rd 14mph/1000rpm
4th 21mph/1000rpm
5th 26mph/1000rpm
6th 32mph/1000rpm

5-spd van
1st 4mph/1000rpm
2nd 9mph/1000rpm
3rd 13mph/1000rpm
4th 19mph/1000rpm
5th 26mph/1000rpm

The 'dodgy' information about gear box ratios refers to the rear wheel drive gear boxes.

Which final drive ratios do the listed speeds refer to?
