which van to buy?

Postby Croftylad » Fri Dec 28, 2012 5:47 pm

Looking for a LWB High top to convert into a camper. The trouble is I don't know which van to buy. For my budget I could afford a low mileage mk6 or a high mileage mk7. This would be a late model mk6 or an early mk7. Any advice or suggestions would be gratefully recieved. The trouble is the choice of transits for sale is massive!
Thanks Antony

Hiya

We bought an ex network rail LWB hiptop mk7 which we are converting into a camper. Its a 2008 and cost us £4500 + VAT (£5400 inc). Its got 132K miles on the clock but has full dealer history and the body is in really good nick. What is really good about the ex-network rail vans is that they tend to come with leisure batteries and quite a lot of the elecs that can be modified to a camper and as they are leased they are well serviced too. Ours is a 115 too and has plently of pull and cruises nicely on the motorway in 6th

Thanks for your replies. I'm sort of flexible on budget. I dont want to spend more than 6k but would rather spend a lot less! VAT is a killer. 5k van plus vat = 6k ouch! Have seen tidy mk6 vans around £3-4K +vat and mk7 vans seem to start at around £4500 +vat for higher mileage vans. Any suggestions gratefully recieved!
Thanks Antony

Go for the mk7, mk6's had a lot of problems with fuel pumps etc which were expensive to fix

No, same pump and injectors from 2000 to 2006. MK6 are old hat now, if you are planning on keeping your camper for a while then start with the newest vehicle you can afford. The newest MK6 is now approaching 7 years old.
