Buying advice for my next van!

Postby brookscd » Fri Aug 02, 2013 7:31 pm

Hello,

I am looking to purchase a secondhand SWB van, there is a wealth of information on here about the Transit however I am struggling to find any information relating to the reliability, common faults and things to look for, for the Renalt Master, Iveco Daily or the Citroen Relay (Fiat & Pergoet) can anyone please suggest where I could find this information or give me any advice.

I did read some where that the Citroen uses the Ford engine with a Fiat gear box, is this right, I would then assume that the issues raised on this forum such as the Fuel pup would be relevant to the Citroen.

Also Having trawled through all the information on here one major concern regarding the Transit is the fuel pump issue, is this specific to the MK6 or MK7 or both!

I am hoping to have a budget of around 5000 for the van for social use not too much hard work, I think the best option is probabily a 2.0 FWD however would like to look at what the others have to offer before going ahead.

Thank You in advance sorry for such a long post with so many questions!!

What have you heard about the fuel pump :?:

TDDi & TDCi engines, which have completely different fuel systems, are both used in the Mk6, TDCi only in the Mk7, so which are you looking at :?:
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)
2004 Mk6 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.0 TDDi - Vantunered (Also gone)
2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

Thank you for your reply Altransit.

I seemed looking through the forum that the fuel pump was a common thing to go wrong, read (although cant remember what thread) that they seemed to go very often as little as three years or 50,000 miles.

I wondered if it was an issue that was specific to a particular engine (I wasn't aware of the two engines in MK6)

I am probably looking at a MK6 for my budget of around £5,000

Thanks again

I've seen on here an advantage of the TDCI being a better engine; better MPG etc

I had thought perhaps a lower mileage, FSH , 'clean' MK6 would be better considering the budget than an average MK7
