Mk4 Camper

Postby KernowViking » Sat Sep 22, 2018 10:55 pm

Evening all.

I've been (slowly) speaking to the owner of a potential new van for myself.

It's a 1992 Mk4 converted camper, 2.0 petrol engine, apparently only 34000 miles. The mot history does seem to back this up as it's covered on average less than 500 miles each year for the last 6-7 years.

Pretty much the whole camper interior is missing, which is fine as I intended to gut it and build one that suits our needs.

It has a current Mot which runs out in April.

Runs fine, but needs easy start to get it going (stale fuel is my opinion?)

He's a man of few words, but reckons it's "All Good" underneath.

Trouble is, it's a 500 mile round trip to view it, so I need to be at least half sure on it before trekking up to see it.

He's asking £1500, which compared to other mk4/5's I've seen, seems to be reasonable?

Any tips or pointers on the apologetically little information I've given?

Cheers All
Rob

It’s a long way to go you no a lot of sellers describe vehicles at the mint and when you get there there a load of rubbish and I don’t like the idea of using airastart start to get it going I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve gone to look at something and took a look and never got out the car because not as described

Yeah I'm the same.
That's why I'm trying to be sure it's worth looking at before going. It's difficult when he doesn't seem as keen!

It's last mot has the same mileage as this years, and it looks as if it's been stood

If I was selling it I’d sort out the starting before I’d put it up for sale when you see in adverts it needs this and that but I have the bits but not time to sort it out allways makes me think is there another problem why didn’t they do it what are they hiding but for you the only way to find out is to go but if the body is good that’s the main thing for me engine is easier to sort

Any mention of rust in the MOT history?
That can give you a bit of a clue.

Dumper this is what I always think when they say "mot's just run out but should sail through". Spending the 50 odd quid on an Mot could make it worth hundreds more.

Being the age it is, it's had rust repairs mentioned on some of the previous Mot's, but not for the last 3 years. Just wipers and bulbs it seems

The only way to really tell is to go look but possible it’s a good van even on eBay I’ve seen vans that look ok in the photos but on inspection are crap but as mk4 s are getting rare you may just have to risk it

I'm hoping it doesn't look worse than it does in the pictures!

Alas, it isn't looking likely as I haven't had a reply from him for a couple of days anyway. He's read my messages but nothing more
