Help Needed... Advice on Transit for camper conversion...

Postby Richied » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:02 pm

First of all I'm really happy to have found this fantastic forum and would like to thank anyone in advance that spends time in assisting me...

I have recently sold my 1989 VW T25 Westfalia camper to free up some cash for a camper/day to day vehicle that better fits my needs. The only way I'm going to get what I need is to build my own...

I've been through a process leading from Ivecos > Sprinters > Relay/Ducato/Boxer > Master/Movano and eventually ended up deciding upon a SWB Semi High Transit as base vehicle.
My reasoning being that:

-I want a compact footprint that's easy to park up in car parks/street and handles more like a car than a truck (Have experience of a SWB Tourneo).
-The SWB semi high top has just enough room for me (and the wife) to stand up in/sleep in and put our kit in.
-Transits are generally mechanically good and cheap to service/repair and seem a good compromise between the pricey German vehicles and the naff French/Italian ones.
-There are plenty out there to choose from.

I have approx £5k to spend and having scoured autotrader etc think I can probably pick up a mk6 260/280 SWB Semi High in good nick with 50-100k miles.

The questions are???

Is the Mk6 a good vehicle?
Is there anything specific I need to look out for when purchasing one? Faults/better models?
Is my expectation of what I can pick up for £5k realistic?

Your help is very much appreciated
Cheers, Rich

With 5k you should be able to get a decent low mileage one, preferably with full service history as they tend to be more reliable when serviced at the proper intervals
