Transit luton mk 4? Also a Mk5 now!

Postby MurrayXmas » Wed Feb 25, 2009 6:08 pm

Gonna look at a 1990 mk4 might be a 3 luton for and with a mate later . Guy wants £1000 70k on the clock and probably the usual clagged up arches.
Anything to look out for on a luton?
Cheers

look for the usual rust, but also check the rear doors for bad pulley systems, and damage to the top front corners of the box, I bought one that had been run into an arched bridge and had put the driver through the windscreen, only realised what had happend when I cleaned out the heater vents of dried blood......nasty, check the springs under load too as they are quite often over loaded in their lifetime.

look along the chassis rails and at the back base of the cab

the luton itself look at the shutter if it has one and pull it right down if the shutter
doesnt follow along the bottom flush with then the chances are the body could be twisted
if its barn doors they should be inline along the top and bottom when there closed if its sitting
on a level road if its on a incline move it on to a level road and check the wireing that follows along the chassis to the rear lights make sure it aint butcherd and check teh plogs that run in to the rear lighst aswell they often pull apart and make ya think the wireing is knackerd when its only the plugs needing pushed together
also if its a ali or GRP box check the actual floor of the luton the bit above the drivers cab if it is loose or drops down when ya put weight on it will mean its sprung so the support spars that are underneath it will drop down and rub on the cab roof and make it rust out, check the floor roof and walls inside for any signs of water damage as it will rot the floor aswell
depending on what weight and how its been treated luton bodys are usually pretty solid
just look for any damage on the chassis for any signs of the box being removed in the past and maybe having a bigger or shorter lengh box fitted to it

bolton & brady boxes are solid but check the joints
as the top corner has been repaired at some point, i think that box has been changed at some point them bolton brady aero bodys were a late style grp body but looks proper on that chassis
looks like a ex electrical delivery body with the locking handle and the full height shutter

corstorphine a take it right next to the tin pail   and sneaking into tescos over flow as well oh cheeky lol fancy picking me a set of golf clubs up

Turns out this van is in pretty good shape. Chassis been undercoated from new and looks to be in excellent condition. Only down sides were a small leak in the box and the usual filled in arches.Only 62k and pretty clean engine. I was trying but couldn't really find fault for the money. Think she may buy it today!

Cheers for the replys. Oh and the american golf shop was shut but next time i'm passin'......
