Whatmodel should I get next?

Hi all,
I have a mk 5 smiley and am about to replace it and looking for advice.

I am told the 2000 and 2001 Transit models were pretty bad. Also that the petrol models are gutless.

Also the the auto transmission had problems, is this the full auto or the pre select, or smart trans?

I suspect some of you have some good and bad views all of which will me select the most reliable from the litter.

I run about 50/50 highway and city driving.

What spec was/is your van? LWB, Mid Roof,Turbo or petrol?

My 2000 2l 75ps has about 180k miles on the clock, I've owned it for half of that and it's only ever been in the garage for servicing/brakes/tyres

I've got a 2002 shr swb 100/280 with 112k on, had it for two years, Ford dealers van before me, only had a starter motor and 2 tyres while I've had it. Does consistent 38mpg mix motorway / town driving. I miss electric windows and mirrors that I had on mk5, which was a bit more solid on build.

All the MK6 diesels are turbo

Forget the so called automatic It's just a manual box who's auto mechanism gives the owner and dealer the biggest and most expensive headache known to man in the automotive industry (probably because they don't really have a clue how they work, rather than anything else)

So what size Transit did you have in mind

I'm looking for a mid or low roof LWB RWD diesel in the mid range power. White, with air con and cargo barrier to close of cargo area, I carry some chemicals that pong, fibreglass and resin.

What year did the Mk roll off the line?

i believe that the mk6 lwb started to come up as early as a W Reg meaning year 2000. you only get a lwb in a medium roof or a high top. no such thing as a lwb low top. i would say go for a 90ps people say the 115 125 can have fuel pump problems.

How would the 90ps mid roof perform compared to my 98 2.f turbo ?

I have a 90ps 2001 transit LWB dropside and has had nothing major done till the axle blew up at 235,000 miles. Not bad at all! Nice smooth, quite and comfy drive compared to the MK5 2.5 diesel

the models after 03 seem to have more responsive engines, think it maybe due to the updated fuel pumps and CAN bus wiring.

seems to be a few issues with the 125ps over the 90ps,

and the 115pstddi replaced the 125pstddi in 04 i think , you wont be disapointed with the 115ps.

i wont even mention the 135tdci

if you go for an earlier one make sure its not the 75ps RWD

allthough the 90 is a good allrounder, with the higher powered ones it will be a more relaxed and easier drive, and also return better MPG if you wanted it to.

make sure you check what diffs are on the vans you look at as this can make a big difference to the van in performance , economy, and towing power.#

My tranny is never fully loaded, it's the space I need than carry capacity, running about 50% town and highway so prefer a diff for high speed low revs and light load.

some people may disagree but i see and here of more problems with the 2.4 rwd engine ,
the FWD gearboxes are bullet proof, just the selector seal and gear linkages give problems(but cheap and easy to fix) i think its the earlier diffs in FWD boxes are weak, but mine stilll did 200k before the diff give up.

for what you need a fwd with the higher speed gearbox(ive gone blank on what ratios are available for FWDs) in is more than adequate for your needs, it would be a great saving in fuel.aswell as much better drive, the RWDs are bigweight carriers or towers.

if you could find a 04-on 100ps mhr mwb you would be happy/ cos its a FWD you would gain 4''s in heioght of load space
