A 'What's is Worth' Thread....Camper (Pic Heavy!)

Postby Anton2k3 » Tue Jan 05, 2010 4:57 pm

Hey guys,

So I'm after a LWB high top county for my next camper conversion, so will be looking to sell our current camper either asap, or as and when a buyer emerges (will continue to use until then).

I would like to know how much you guys think I should be asking. I'll post a spec, and pics below that for people to get an idea of what's on offer.

Body:
MK3 SWB 1989 Transit Minibus
New Rear arches, front arches, front wings, front spring hangers, front crossmember and rear doors along with full re-spray a couple of years ago, so no rust showing. The van is solid, and sails through its MOT's. In fact I'd be more than happy to put 12 months on for any buyers.
Mileage: Clocks showed 49,000 (not sure of the accuracy of this though)
Well maintained at any expense, including brakes etc.
Spare wheel located on rear door. 20l jerry can on other door along with ladders for roof access (comes with roof bars for roof boxes etc)

Engine:
Recently converted from 2.0l pinto to MK5 2.5l 100ps EPIC Turbo Diesel. It runs like a dream, and very smooth to drive. Loads of power and can easily cruise at 70, with hills having no effect. Top end I would estimate around 95, but I have no need to go that fast. However it will pull when floored at 70. When the engine was put in around a month ago, It had new:

-Clutch
-Timing Belt
-Alternator Belt
-Power Steering Belt
-Fuel Filter
-Oil Filter
-Full Exhaust System
-Air Filter
-Fresh Engine Oil
-Fresh P/S Oil
-Fresh Gearbox Oil
-Cam Cover Gasket

Mileage on Engine: 107,000. So hardly worn in!

Interior Front:

Complete MK5 transit dashboard and wiring loom (Rev counter clocks etc)
Seats swapped out for BMW counterparts including custom frames. Gas bottle locker built in-between seats with Oak faced ply work-top.
Alpine MP3 CD Heat unit
Sony custom 10cm speakers
Turbo boost gauge to monitor turbo performance

Camper Conversion In Rear

Storage:
Storage boxes above front seats
Storage underneath storage boxes
Kitchen cupboards
Swing out rear cupboard
Rear storage Wardrobe

Water System:
12v Microswitch system
Hot/cold mixer tap
Drinking water tap linked to Naturepure water filter (can drink water direct from tanks, even if filled from rivers etc!)
External hot shower
120l onboard fresh water (1 tank built into kitchen unit, another in base of wardrobe, both fillers accessed from rear doors, but tanks linked)
Carver Cascade Mk2 gas and electric 9l hot water heater. Thus can be used on or off electrical hook up.

Electrical:
12v electrical system, with fuse box in engine bay
3x 12v Lights
Water level gauge
Battery level gauge
70Ah Leisure Battery (Did have 290Ah of leisure batteries, but had to take the 2 110Ah out when installed new engine. Can re-install in another location at buyers discretion).
350 watt inverter, which links to rear camper conversion when not hooked up to mains. Thus 240v electrics are available 24/7. Ideal for laptops etc.
Status 530/5 TV directional TV aerial with booster. Found this to be a great bit of kit, can almost always get a signal be it analog or digital. TV plug located with gauges.
4 x 240v sockets in rear
Sterling Advanced Alternator to battery charger (boosts and regulates charging of battery banks from alternator)
Sterling 20 Amp 240v mains battery charger
Extractor fan

Cooking:
2 x gas hobs
Grill
New oven with thermostatic control

Heating:
Gas Radiator

Fridge:
3 way fridge, can run off gas, 12v or 240v

General Furnishing:
All work-tops constructed from oak faced ply with solid oak edging
Units finished with off-white paint
Lino floor beneath carpet to ensure water proof integrity.
Head lining trimmed in faux suede
Carbon monoxide sensor
Push botton door locks so no doors come flying open unexpectedly.
Safe for passports etc.
Oak faced ply with solid oak edging removable table with leg base in the floor.
Porta-Potti 365 toilet stored in rear cupboard.

Thats all I can think of for now, will add anything else as I think of it. This has been built as a wild camper, so stopping on campsites is not necessary (but you can if you want!).

What an awesome van - it's got everything! Amazed you fitted so much into such a tight space. Do yourself a favour and wait till spring for the best price possible. With the amount of work thats gone into it whoever gets it will be getting a good deal whatever the price!

Thanks for the comments guys. Yea thats why its difficult to put a price on. However its of equal professional finish to a factory (if i do say so myself!). Getting an idea of what people would be prepared to pay for it gives a fairly good indication though.

Were planning on using is until the easter time-ish unless someone puts an offer in before then. Then want to build a 4x4 camper to do iceland etc. What 4x4 vans do you guys think would be a good base?

Anton

I have seen similar spec vans of about the same age selling in the region of £3k-£4k at stealers.

I don't see you having a problem selling this for between £3500 and £3850 or thereabouts.

Cool thats around what I was hoping to get for it. I may put a high roof on it and possibly some sort of inside shower before I sell it, depends when it goes really.

Any ideas on 4x4 vans?

These are the best ones prior to going all the way and getting a SAT dish. In poor reception areas it will work, just point it in the direction of the strongest signal, and tilt it according to which orientation gives best picture. In poor reception areas I would try analogue tuning before digital though.

Hope this helps,

Anton

Ok cool, that's encouraging. So I'll prob wait until after Easter to put it up
for sale, I guess that will be when people start looking
for summer vans?

For a 4x4 a toyota landcruiser could be a reliable choice.
When i was working for the UN in Afrika i was amazed by it's reliability and toughness/ resistance to dust, poor drivers and abuse.

My girlfriend drives a nissan terrano II long version, it has an 2.7tdi engine and is a lot cheaper than the toyota it also has a luxuary look and feel inside/outside. Ford made the same model : the maverick.

We also have a big shiny bullbar on the nose. I can't say much about reliability, my girl pulls a horsetrailer loaded with two horses without problems.

I have no idea on what campers are worth as i am new to it all but i like the look of your van. I hope my first build comes out half as good. I been following campers on a few sites and not many are selling for good prices at the moment so as people have said wait until the sun starts shining again before selling.

I now understand you are looking for a 4x4 camper van or a base to build a camper on.
You could look for a vw t4 synchro or a t5 4motion
