old petrol versus newer diesel

Postby shwmae » Mon May 24, 2010 4:56 pm

Hello
In your valued opinion guys & gals, which could be considered a better bet for my next Ford purchase? a 2 ltr pinto petrol with over head cam , year is 1987 and only 22,000 miles on the clock , asking about £1500 or a 2.5 1997 diesel with high milegae of 194,500 for sale at £2,300. Both are converted campers which is why I am looking at them, I would hate to sound as if I have any idea about engines cos I don't, although I do already own a 2.5 ltr diesel ex BT open reach van, thank you for any help and advice, hope its as sunny there... :)

Thanks , both are too far to justify a test drive so was going to take a chance on one of them, what is the "I" for in DI?

but assuming it has'nt then 200k is high? so how many miles would you expect from a well maintained engine?

One here not a Di but a TDCI and there plenty of Di's with more than 200k on the clock that I would'nt hesitate to buy!!

to be honest at 200k i'd be more worried about the van than the engine.

my w reg 2.5 di workhorse has 153k on it, and apart from the air-in-fuel stuttering that all di's suffer from its doing pretty well, always clean on the mot despite the fact i often cant be arsed to check the oil and when i do its off the stick.

the van on the other hand is a complete sh*tbox, the clutch is shot, the starter sticks, the heater motor bearing has collapsed and the motor has burnt out, the front arches have turned to rust and fallen apart, despite being unmarked 18 moths ago, in fact threres rust creaping in everywhere, chassis rails blistering at the drain holes and along the floor seams. my last van went the same way, within 18 months of the rust being a noticable problem there were holes in the rear corners big enough that i could stand through them on the road below.

what im getting at is any van with 200k on it is very likely well past its sell by date, the body will have faired far far worse over those miles than the engine.

i would be buying on condition not on the engine type, have a good look at the problem areas and dont be afraid to give it a poke with a stick - they can often look solid with unmarked paint and underseal and in fact be solid rust. its not that hard to do an engine swap if you must, in fact its a whole lot easier than cutting all the rust out and making sure it dosent get back in.

we all know aout the rust issues of the mk 3/4/ you can have as much rust on one of these with 80k than you can on one with 200k.
The O.P was asking if 200k was high milage for a DI, which it isn't.

yes he was, but we're talking 22k vs 200k, not 80k. i'm merely suggesting that at that differential, engine condition isnt the thing he should be worrying about.

Personally I would say the petrol for that purpose as you already know the diesel will be noisy plus although like said the DI willl have plenty of life left a nice 22k motor is hard to come by in good cond IMO it would be the better of the 2 choices
