Which Engines To Avoid ???

Postby Dave Mason » Tue Jun 15, 2010 11:37 am

Hi All ..

I'm looking to buy a newer Transit... Mine is a 150 SWB, that's now past it's Sell By Date...

I need a MWB, to carry 8 feet or 2.4 meter, Semi High Roof

That will cruse at 80/ 90 mph

Carry a load of about 1 - 1.5 Ton

Long Distance.. Ie Good Fuel Consumtion... What Axle Returns Best Economy ????

I've been told to avoid the 125 BHP engine, as they suffer from Turbo failure ???

Which Models Require A Class 7 MOT ???

Can Any One Please Advise What Model I should Be Looking For....

Many Thanks

Dave

As a MK5 owner my knowledge of Mk6 &7 is a little sketchy, but from what I have read on here, the 90 or 100ps engines seem to be the most reliable, but obviously not the most powerful. I have driven a 90ps RWD LWB and that seemed to have adequate power (From a 70ps MK5 owners perspective!!) and would cruise at 70 with power to spare. The 100ps FWD SWB I drove seemed very lively and happily reached 100mph on my private test track :!: :P

Anything with a GVW over 3000kg will be a Class 7 MOT

1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)
2004 Mk6 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.0 TDDi - Vantunered (Also gone)
2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

Just to add to Als post, a 330 or 350 would be over 3000kg so class 7 test

The tdci engines (125ps FWD and 135ps RWD) can be more trouble some than the tddi so are best avoided unless they have water tight service history

Ideally you should look for a FWD T300 with a 100ps engine :)
