Buying Advice for Mk6 350/90

Postby Harmitans » Fri Jan 28, 2011 12:07 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm going to look at a Mk6 2001 RWD LWB 350/90 Transit tomorrow. It will be my first Transit so just looking for a few tips.

I've had a search on the site and I think the VIN number should be in the Windscreen, N/S door shut and O/S/F Inner Wing. The Engine number should be by the rear right hand side of the cylinder block, by the oil sump flange, and also is located on the right hand side of the cylinder head above the exhaust manifold. Is this everywhere I need to look to check all the numbers?

Also are there any common faults or expensive repair jobs I should be looking for? The van has got 80k miles on the clock at the moment.

Cheers,

Martin

listen to it from cold by turning up earlier than expected( if youre going in the morning that is). that way you will be able to tell if the timing chain should need replacing as its expensive to fix if it goes. you will hear a metallic rattle that should dissapear after a few seconds. make sure right colour coolant/ antifreeze is in the header tank(should be a red/pink colour) cos if not it will damage other parts of the engine(again expensive) listen for any clonks while youre driving as it could be play in the prop bearings or even worse the diff. just give the van a good once over which u probably will anyway like oil level and colour and ur instinct should tell u if its been looked after. good luck mate and if you do buy it and come across any problems were here to help :D
