Mk1 Camper

Postby tranorak » Wed Jan 17, 2007 7:01 pm

For years this Mk1 was a landmark beside the main road just outside Honiton until about a year or two ago when a Welshman I know bought it.
He got me to trailer it away, my fee was that lovely aluminium poptop :) but the wa**ers busted it rolling the van over with a forklift and the poptop hit a car alongside :x
The camper seemed highly saveable to me, more algi slime than rust. :o
It had a wacky bench seat across the front that became a bed. He saved that bit and sold it on. The front screen was rescued. Most of the rest got weighed in
I reckon now only a few years later it would be a resto prospect; values seem to've risen a lot since all that 40th birthday stuff.
& check out the antique sidelights on top of the wings

I bet it was savable too, cosmetics aside if the underside is solid it's half the battle. The window arrangement leaving the louvres in the side made it prime for returning to a van too.

camper to van

Postby tranorak » Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:08 pm

That looks a lot better now Fred. well done :)
Just before this forum got going, when I thought I was the only Transit van nutter, I saved a decent pair of Mk1 transit sides for just that exact purpose..... turning some distasteful camper back into a proper Panel Van :D .......

Image
Then I lost my storage so I put them on ebay for 99p.... no bids  so they got weighed in :(

You don't actually need the whole sides, Ant just used bits of smiley!

Not a bad idea, just didn't have the time to find the right sides, the originals were straight but had windows. Most scrappers are dented and have some rust.
