Mystery GRP Mk1 in Ireland ??

Postby tranorak » Wed Oct 26, 2005 12:07 am

A couple of years ago an Irish chap was telling me about a van he was trying to buy from a friend of his, but the friend swore he would Never sell it. It was a longwheelbase Mk1 transit panel van, badly faded red colour and perfect in every detail but Fibreglass from the windscreen and doors back. It looked bog standard but was fibreglass. It had a massive Yank V8 fitted which they reckoned had been done more recently by rodders who'd got hold of it, they didn't think the rodders had built the body, if only that the quality was too good, too professional. The origins are mysterious but seemed to lie in the 'troubles' one way or another. His mate reckoned it was a bomb van, no body to limit the blast see, but why bother with all the detailing if you're just gonna blow it up? More likely a Goverment surveillance vehicle, no metal bodywork to mangle radio signals etc so no need for antenna up top, very discreet. Also no sign of ever having had any chassis numbers anywhere! 8)

This isn't the actual van but gives an idea what it must've looked like. So has anyone else heard about this one? :?:

If this isn't an urban myth, it needs to be found and saved!

some were made for the army lighter and less metal to atract land mines. I do have a right up here somewhere on this, the other aplication at the time was they were put down the mines to pull the carts of tin and coal as they would not rust and replaced donkys that used to do the job, when the mines closed they were just sealed in. someone in 200 or so years time is going to find them.......

No, I meant the pics of the Mk1s down the mines, think there are one or two in the Graham Robson book.

 There are three mk3 twin wheel chassis cabs down Boulby potash mine just up the road from Whitby. Its the deepest mine in Europe the mine shaft is nearly a mile deep, to get them down they put straps round the rear axles and lowered them nose first down the shaft dont know what they did when they reached the bottom to get them back on the wheels. We had a look down the mine in 1993 and the two down there then were put down there when new one had done 30,000 miles the other had done about 60,000 just running about down below the third went down around 2000
