Im from kidderminster worcs, All my family are romany.
New age travellers are just hippies and arent accepted in the gypsy/traveller communtiy as most of them have got houses and just do it as a hobby! Most romany families live in kenners now. Not out of choice but living on the road is too dangerous with people trying to damage your trailers and stuff.

well that's my idea of a Romany gypsy the horse and the caravan but like you said issics i know showmen in Glasgow who have been attacked for ppls ignorance to the fact they are actually different from the Irish travelers who just take the piss in glasgow there are 200+ show mans sites mostly in the east end of the city and they are welcomed by most but the travelers(Irish) are forced to live in dumbarton and places and just to put a point across most of the "irish" travelers have never been to Ireland just they have the accent cos they live in the community and the accent is the one they are brought up hearing they are born in the UK

its a great shame some of them ruin it for everbody, i have met some very nice gypsys in my time most are great but its the odd few that ruin it! unfortunatly my passion for transits is the same as theres
its strange how a few years ago they were not much into the mk1 transit pick ups but more into the bedford J type but now the transit is the in thing!

Yeah It is a shame. Most of my freinds and family like the transit cus its easy to work on and is a good workhorse. At least with a tranny you can go anywhere and get cheap bits but with other makes it can be a nightmare.

There are alot of people who cant tell the difference and make up their mind about us, they cant even be bothered to do five minuites of searching on google!

Im not into all the politically correct words and stuff but calling us a pikey is the worst thing you can do. A pikey is someone who has been kicked out of the familly for doing something really bad. I mean people wouldnt walk down the road and shout Paki at an indian loading his van so why should it be ok to call us a pikey? its still an insult!

Names change over time to include way more than they were ever intended to, look at Chav's short for chavvies which to you will mean children? If I remember correctly. The rest of the country doesn't take a chav to mean a child now though even if the people they aim the term at are youngish.
To some extent you have to just cut us other people some slack like as it annoys the hell out of me that a black man is 'allowed' to call a fellow black man the N word but if a white man use the term it is automatically an insult??? even if contextually it is being used correctly (see Rush Hour if you want correct contextual use, but still frowned upon by Chris Rock)

So who are the women that try and sell me heather in the street? Romanys, Gypsies, or Pikeys? *NOTE* this is a Question as I don't know which is the correct term
